Trauma care disparities have been documented for decades, but our understanding of their origins has shifted dramatically, from patient-level factors and provider bias toward structural and systems-level forces such as socioeconomic barriers, geographic access gaps, prehospital undertriage, and hospital quality variation. This lecture will explore the evolving evidence on the origins of disparities, present frameworks for understanding their complexity, and discuss implications for trauma nursing practice and advocacy.

πŸ’¬ Viewpoint by Nicole Huberfeld, JD, and Claudia Haupt, PhD, JSD: Recent US Supreme Court decisions, including First Choice Women’s Resource Centers v Davenport and Chiles v Salazar, have expanded First Amendment protections in ways that may constrain state regulation of the medical profession, particularly when regulation addresses speech or religious belief.

These rulings could hinder state investigations into deceptive or substandard medical practices and make it more difficult to enforce evidence-based standards of care, as requirements for content and viewpoint neutrality present new obstacles for consumer protection and medical licensing.
