On September 11, 2001, our country changed forever. Today we remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives, the families who lost loved ones, and the first responders who ran toward unimaginable danger.

There is also an extraordinary horse story connected to what happened next.

Just 38 days after 9/11, U.S. Army Special Forces entered Afghanistan. Members of Operational Detachment Alpha 595 — ODA 595 — linked up with fighters of Afghanistan’s Northern Alliance and found themselves doing something few could have imagined in modern warfare: going into battle on horseback.

Many of the Green Berets were not experienced horsemen. They rode small, incredibly tough Afghan horses across mountains and treacherous terrain, sometimes traveling for hours in primitive tack while carrying their weapons and equipment. From horseback, the Americans helped coordinate air strikes while Northern Alliance cavalry fought Taliban forces on the ground.

The horses endured the same brutal terrain and dangers of war. Some were wounded, and some did not survive.

The men became known as the Horse Soldiers.

Today, their story has a permanent connection to the place where it all began. The bronze America’s Response Monument, commonly called the Horse Soldier statue, stands near the World Trade Center site in New York. It depicts a Special Forces soldier mounted on an Afghan horse and honors the men who answered America’s call in the weeks following September 11.

As horse people, we know how much humans have asked of horses throughout history. Even in a 21st-century war fought with satellites, helicopters and precision-guided weapons, horses once again carried soldiers into battle.

Today we remember the people we lost on 9/11, the people who ran toward danger to save others, those who answered the call afterward — and the remarkable horses that carried them.
