The flag tells you where the hole is.

It doesn’t always tell you where to aim. ⛳

Picture a flag near the right edge of the green, with a deep bunker beside it.

You aim at the flag and miss a little right. Now you’re in the sand.

Aim farther toward the middle, and that same small miss could leave you putting.

Same miss. Different next shot.

Before your next approach, give yourself this quick check:

🎯 FIND THE TROUBLE
Where would a miss leave you in water, sand, or with very little green between your ball and the hole?

🏌️ ALLOW FOR YOUR NORMAL MISS
Choose a target with room for the shots you actually hit, not just your best one.

⛳ PICTURE THE NEXT SHOT
If you miss your target slightly, will you still have a manageable shot afterward?

The middle of the green is often a useful starting point. Adjust for the trouble, slope, conditions, and the club in your hands.

Here’s something to try during your next round:

When a flag sits beside trouble, pick a specific target in the more forgiving part of the green. Commit to that spot.

Then notice what happens when your shot isn’t perfect.

You’re not trying to miss. You’re giving yourself room when you do.

Moving up a tee isn’t giving up. ⛳

You hit a solid drive. Your next shot is solid, too. But the green is still out of reach.

If that happens on most par 4s, your starting tees deserve a second look.

Here are three things to notice during your next round:

🏌️ Can a normal, well struck drive comfortably reach the fairway?

🎯 On most par 4s, do two solid shots give you a realistic chance of reaching the green or getting close?

🔄 Are you using a variety of clubs for your approach shots, or constantly reaching for your longest clubs?

One tough hole doesn’t tell the whole story. Look for the pattern across your round.

If distance keeps taking the green out of play, try one set of tees closer during your next casual round.

Then pay attention: Are you getting more manageable approaches? Using more of your bag? Getting a chance to capitalize when you hit a good shot?

That tells you more than the score alone.

You can still play with your friends while using different starting tees. Choosing a distance that suits your game doesn’t mean leaving the group.

Phil came in for a fitting this summer with one goal: more consistency.

After picking up his Tour Edge Max irons, his first three rounds were in the low 80s, much like the rounds he had been playing before. Then he began shooting consistently in the mid 70s.

On September 7, Phil posted a career best **68** from the green tees at Golden Hills Golf & Country Club.

How far does your 7 iron really go? ⛳

That one perfect shot can stay in your memory for a long time. Knowing what your usual swing produces can help you choose your next club with more confidence.

Start with these two distances:

CARRY is how far the ball travels before it first lands.

TOTAL is how far it finishes after bouncing and rolling.

For example, a shot that lands at 135 yards and rolls to 150 yards has a carry distance of 135 yards.

That difference matters when there’s water or a bunker between you and the green.

Here’s something useful to try at your next practice session:

Pick one club. If shot tracking is available, check the carry distance of several shots with your normal swing. Look for the distance you see most often, and notice how much your shorter shots vary.

Save those numbers in your phone. Build your reference one club at a time.

Knowing your usual distance, along with the room you need for a miss, gives you a better starting point for choosing a club.

Before you take the first swing, you already know why you came.

The morning air. The familiar feel of a club in your hands. A ball waiting on the grass, and a whole round still ahead of you.

And then there’s that shot.

The sound of a clean strike. The ball taking the exact flight you pictured. That feeling in your hands before you even look up.

You caught it right. And you know it.

Maybe that’s what first made you fall in love with golf.

Or maybe it was the person who put a club in your hands. The rounds with friends you’re still talking about. Those early mornings when there was nowhere else you wanted to be.

You can forget the score and still remember the day. Who you played with. What you laughed about.

Some rounds test every bit of your patience. Yet on the drive home, you’re already thinking about when you can play again.

After more than 25 years in golf, I still understand that feeling.

I still love seeing that excitement when you walk into the shop. Hearing about your last round. Helping you get ready for the next one.

That sixth attempt was beautiful.

Let’s give the first one a little more attention.

Next time you visit the range, save the last ten balls for this:

ONE BALL. ONE CHANCE. NEW TARGET.

Before each shot, choose a visible landing area, such as a target green. Make it a realistic size for your game.

Choose your club, go through your normal routine, and hit one ball.

If its first bounce is inside your chosen area, give yourself one point.

Then change the target or distance for the next ball, choosing the club that fits the new shot.

And yes, the ugly one counts. We know how tempting that “one more” can be.

After ten balls, you have a score out of ten.

You’ve also practiced making a fresh decision, committing to it, and moving on after the result. Those are useful things to rehearse for the course.

Before you leave, notice where your misses went. Mostly short? Mostly right? That gives your next practice session something specific to explore.

Save this for your next bucket and send it to your range partner. A little friendly competition is welcome.

Ever finish a round thinking, “I should be better than this. Look at my handicap”?

Here’s a detail that puts that feeling into perspective.

Your handicap describes your better golf.

Once your record contains at least 20 Score Differentials, the basic calculation averages the lowest eight of your most recent 20.

A Score Differential accounts for the difficulty of the course and tees you played. Other adjustments can also apply.

That gives your better results an important role in a number designed to reflect your demonstrated ability.

So when a round gets frustrating, keep your attention on the shot in front of you. You have enough to think about without turning every hole into a judgment of your entire golf game.

And keep submitting every score that qualifies for handicapping. The system handles which results go into the calculation.
