Every athlete makes mistakes.

It can feel frustrating and upsetting to be in that place- especially feeling stuck in the moment.

Adopting a next play mentality helps athletes:

Reset.
Refocus.
Respond.

After a mistake or setback occurs:

➡ Take a breath
➡ Reset your focus
➡ Move forward with intention

Keep pushing forward!

Tournaments are fun but can take a toll on athletes mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Playing numerous games on the same day can make it challenging for athletes to process and evaluate their performance. Before analyzing performance, it is important to let emotions subside.

Here are some tips for athletes post-tournament:
1. Identify what your team did well
2. Identify what you did well
3. Identify what your team needs to improve upon
4. Identify what you need to improve upon
5. Establish specific goals for yourself to move forward

Most importantly, remember that everything is a learning experience!

Do you have a tournament this weekend? If so, this post is for you!!

Tournaments are fun but present several elements outside an athlete’s control—travel, multiple daily games, weather, eating on the road, etc.

Many of these elements could cause an athlete to feel stressed and impact their performance.

If you have an upcoming tournament, consider following these strategies to help you stay mentally prepared!!

Most importantly….HAVE FUN!!

Nobody talks about the grief that comes with injury.

The grief of missing your season. The grief of losing your routine. The grief of watching from the sidelines. The grief of not feeling like yourself. The grief of missing who you were prior the injury.

Injury isn’t just physical. It’s emotional, too.

If you’re grieving during an injury, it doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means you lost something important that mattered to you.

Recovery involves healing both the body and the mind.

Let’s keep this conversation going and support each other during these challenging times.

Going through an injury doesn’t mean you can’t focus on strengthening your mind.

Here are five mental skills to train:

1️⃣ Visualization — mentally rehearse your return to sport
2️⃣ Self-talk — audit and reframe your inner dialogue
3️⃣ Focus control — practice directing attention intentionally
4️⃣ Emotional regulation — learn to sit with emotions without judgment
5️⃣ Identity work — strengthen who you are beyond your sport

When your body is ready to return to sport, your mind will already be prepared!
