It's been a while since we have posted any updates here. We are now only 5 months and 15 days away from the start of Race Across America. Both Mark Gibson and Yann Bertaud are training hard with the help of their coach Jane Rynbrandt Marshall from CTS. Yann is scheduled to ride the Coast Ride (San Francisco to Santa Barbara) on January 18th, covering 375 miles and 23000 feet of climbing over 3 days. Yann spent this weekend training for the Coast Ride, logging 182 miles in 2 days, while Mark logged almost the same amount of miles down in Irvine.
In March, Mark, Yann, Paul Webb and a few other endurance riders will be participating in the Solvang Double Century hoping to cover 200 miles in under 10 hours.
On April 18, Mark, Yann and most of the crew for RAAM will be simulating the first day of the race by riding for about 24 hours from Oceanside to Salome Arizona and back to Blythe arizona, covering a distance of 450 miles. This will help us figure out vehicle, crew, nutrition/hydration and a day in the life of RAAM race.
We are also continuing to raise money for World Bicycle Relief. Hoping you might consider making a small tax deductible donation to our fundraising page: https://give.worldbicyclerelief.org/BuffaloBikersRAAM2020 our goal is $150,000. We are only at $10000.

Dear all. Saturday, as part of very early training for RAAM, and my upcoming 12 hour time trial in November, Paul Webb and I rode 200 miles in the Carmel Valley Double Century. We had a good day on the bike, we started at 6am from King City off highway 101, riding 70 some miles to the southern tip of Carmel and then 50 miles down the coast on highway 1. We had some spectacular views of the ocean as we made our way down the coast until we turned inland with a 6 mile, 2200' climb. We then had a fun descent down into the valley until we were hit with very strong headwinds to the southern tip of the course. As is always the case on a long bike ride, as we headed back north to the finish the wind seemed to shift direction and was still a headwind. The last 12 miles to the finish the wind seemed to increase substantially, Paul, myself and another rider took turns getting in front and fighting the wind. We finally made it in shortly after 7pm, just over 13 hours total time, 11 hours 42 minutes moving time, average moving speed of 17.2 mph, 13540 feet climbed and 8600 calories burned.

This is why we are raising money for World Bicycle Relief, you can see the kids receiving their bikes at a recent bike distribution in Zambia. I got to distribute bikes in Zambia 2 years ago and experienced the same gratitude from the families and kids when I was there. This program is so tangible, you see the results of the fundraising. So happy to be a supporter of WBR.

An update on Mark and I’s preparation for RAAM 2020 race. Yes, it’s 10 months away, but you can’t start too early. Yesterday Mark rode 200 miles by himself, unsupported, as he prepares for the 500 mile solo ride he’ll be doing in the Silver State 508 in a couple of weeks. As for me, yesterday, I rode with my friends Paul and Noel and climbed a hair short of 11k feet over 80 miles. Sunday, I rode with my friend Thomas, where I focused on speed and distance, 72 miles at 19.3 mph. Feeling my fitness coming back, and enjoying the rides with friends. It’s a great motivator and lots of fun. Thanks guys!!

Mark, Paul and I are starting to put some of the pieces of the puzzle together for our RAAM 2020 race. We have started designing our kits, crew/racer t-shirts. I have hired the same coach that has made Mark so successful in his various race endeavors, to whip me into shape. And most importantly, we have our fundraising page setup
