THE AVATAR

• Earth
• Air
• Fire
• Water

“The Avatar must learn to master all four elements.”

We are born with the ability to master all four elements. But somewhere along our path, the memory of mastering the “avatar state” is stripped away from us. Regardless of the condition we find ourselves in at any point in our lives, we can reconnect with this innate knowledge and relearn the wisdom of the masters who have paved the road to mastery of the “avatar state.”

What is the “avatar state”?

We must learn to breathe with purpose and intention.
We must learn to move with purpose and intent.
We must learn to consume water with purpose.
We must learn to generate internal energy through coordinated, rigorous exercise.

The ancient masters knew the importance of applying the four elements in their lives.

EARTH – every physical action should be performed with intent and purpose, controlled with mental discipline and awareness.

AIR – every breath should be deep and controlled, allowing the smooth conveyance of oxygen into the lungs and bloodstream.

FIRE – internal energy should be regulated by strenuous exercise, which helps to promote physical strength, flexibility, and endurance.

WATER – the body is composed of a high percentage of water, the fluid of life, and denying it the liquid nourishment it needs is like turning a lush green valley into a barren desert.

This is the lesson I have learned. Mastering the “avatar state” requires diligent adherence to these principles.

Why is this important?

Long life is a process of following the teachings of the ancient masters. Practice these principles with intent and purpose.

- Be aware of your breathing.

- Always drink plenty of water.

- Move with intent and purpose.

- Exercise regularly to improve the flow of energy through your body.

These are the elements that comprise the “avatar state.” Be mindful and deliberate in your training. Practicing a “martial art” can be rewarding when the student understands the truth of the Avatar. Learning to punch, block, and kick is not simply about fighting or defending oneself from an enemy. It is about learning the principles of attaining the “avatar state” through rigorous practice and discipline.

TO MY MASTER

The wind and Sun upon my face,
My body moved with speed and grace.

A fire burned within my breast,
Anticipating my Master's test.

With every breath, the fire burned,
In each technique that I had learned

From Master Thai, my Sa Bom Nim.
This memory I share is owed to him.

"Training was devout, and energy flowed like a stream."

The young students who now gathered to watch him were often confused. He spent more time watching the slow drift of leaves than practicing a kick. His own practice was simple: the same four movements, repeated slowly, perfectly, every single morning.

One afternoon, a restless young student, eager for flash and spectacle, asked, "Master, why do you move so slowly? You were once the fastest."

Master Di looked at his hands—knotted and spotted, but still powerful. He smiled. "I was fast because I had to be. Now," he tapped his cane gently on the courtyard stone, "I am slow because I can be. When you move fast, you focus on the target you are trying to reach. When you move slowly, you focus on the path you are traveling. That is the difference between a fighter and a true master."

His body was no longer the weapon of his youth, but his mind, tempered by time and experience, had become unbreakably sharp. Master Di, old and gray, had traded the storm's furious power for the mountain's unyielding patience. He no longer sought victory over others; he had achieved the greater victory over time itself.

The Wandering Master

Episode 3 - THE PORT CITY
Part One - The Welcome

The quiet solitude of the mountains eventually gave way to a yearning for the bustle of human interaction once more. Master Kai, his staff in hand, set his sights on Quanzhou, a legendary port city he had heard whispered about in his travels. Tales of its vibrant markets, towering ships sailing to distant lands, and the confluence of cultures painted a vivid picture in his mind. He journeyed eastward, through fertile plains and winding rivers, until the salty tang of the sea filled the air, signaling his arrival.

Quanzhou was a riot of sights and sounds. Merchants from faraway lands hawked their exotic wares, their voices a blend of unfamiliar tongues. Ships with billowing sails crowded the harbor, their masts a forest against the azure sky. The city's energy was palpable, a stark contrast to the tumultuous city of Baoding.

Kai, accustomed to a simpler way of life, found the sheer scale of the port overwhelming, yet undeniably captivating. He needed to find work; his journey had depleted his meager savings. He approached the bustling docks, hoping to offer his strength and discipline for honest labor.

However, the docks of Quanzhou were not governed by honest toil alone. Shadowy figures with hardened eyes and coiled muscles moved with an air of authority, their presence radiating menace. These were the gang members who controlled the flow of goods and the labor force, their influence woven deep into the fabric of the port.

Kai was met with sneers and dismissive gestures as he inquired about work. "New meat," one burly man with a scarred face spat, sizing Kai with a contemptuous gaze. "You want to load cargo? You pay us a cut. Everything that moves on this dock pays us."

Kai, his brow furrowed, replied calmly, "I seek only honest work for honest pay. I have little to spare for those who demand without laboring."

His words were met with a chorus of rough laughter. Another gang member, his hand resting on the hilt of a concealed blade, stepped forward. "Honest pay? Here, 'honest' means you pay us protection money or don't work. Maybe you don't even walk away."

Kai's eyes remained steady. He had faced armed ninjas; these petty thugs did not intimidate him, but he preferred to avoid unnecessary conflict. "I mean no trouble. I wish to earn my keep."

"Trouble finds those who don't understand how things work here," the scarred man growled, stepping closer. He shoved Kai’s shoulder roughly. "Now, are you going to pay, or are you going to learn the hard way?"

Kai stood his ground, and the subtle tension in his body was the only indication of his readiness. "I will not be extorted."

Before the situation could escalate further, a sharp and commanding whistle pierced the air. All eyes turned towards a raised platform where a richly dressed man, flanked by more gang members, stood surveying the docks.

"What's the commotion here?" the man called out, his voice carrying an air of bored authority.

The scarred man gestured towards Kai. "This newcomer is refusing to pay his dues, Master Feng."

Master Feng’s gaze swept over Kai, lingering momentarily on his simple attire and the worn staff. A cruel smile played on his lips. "A stubborn one, eh? Perhaps a demonstration is in order. Teach him the cost of defiance."

The gang members surged forward, their intent clear. Kai knew he could not reason with them. He adjusted his grip on his staff, his years of training instantly taking over. The bustling sounds of the port faded into the background as he prepared to face the first wave of attackers, the cool sea breeze a stark contrast to the brewing storm of conflict. His journey to the vibrant port of Quanzhou had taken an unexpected, potentially dangerous turn.

Part Two - The Offer

Master Feng's command was a spark igniting a powder keg. The gang members, a dozen strong, surged forward, their crude weapons—knives, clubs, and even lengths of heavy chain—glinting under the afternoon sun. They moved with the unrefined aggression of street brawlers, confident in their numbers.

Kai met their charge with an unnerving stillness. He didn't rush, didn't shout. His staff, which had seemed merely a walking aid moments before, became an extension of his will. The first man, swinging a hefty club, found his weapon expertly parried. The force of his own blow was redirected, sending him stumbling past Kai. Before he could recover, Kai's staff swept low, tripping another attacker who had tried to flank him.

He moved like water, flowing around the blows, deflecting, disarming, and disrupting. There was no wasted motion, no unnecessary force. A knife-wielder lunged, and Kai's staff met his wrist with a sharp rap, sending the blade clattering to the cobblestones. Another, attempting a grapple, found himself swiftly spun and gently pushed into his own comrade, creating a momentary tangle of limbs.

The gang's initial confidence quickly evaporated, replaced by confusion and frustration. They were used to intimidation and overwhelming numbers, not facing an opponent who seemed to dance through their attacks effortlessly. Their coordinated assault dissolved into a chaotic scramble as they stumbled over each other, their blows missing their mark or being expertly diverted.

Master Feng, watching from his elevated perch, felt a flicker of something akin to awe, quickly followed by a cold fury. This was no ordinary vagrant. This was a master. His face, usually impassive, now contorted in a sneer. "Stop playing!" he roared, "Bring him down!"

But "bringing him down" proved easier said than done. While avoiding serious injury from his attackers, Kai ensured they learned a painful lesson. A well-placed tap to the shin, a gentle push that sent them sprawling, a swift block that jarred their arms – each move was a testament to years of rigorous training, designed to incapacitate without lasting harm. Within moments, half the gang lay groaning on the ground, nursing bruised limbs and shattered egos, while the others hesitated, their bravado replaced by a wary respect.

The commotion had drawn a crowd. Dockworkers, merchants, and even a few foreign sailors paused their tasks, their eyes wide as they witnessed the incredible display. Among them was a man of dignified bearing, his silk robes a stark contrast to the rough attire of the dockhands. This was Master Li, a respected merchant who dealt in rare silks and spices, known for his sharp mind and keen eye. He had been observing the scene from the moment Kai refused to be intimidated, and now, with a thoughtful expression, he watched the master at work.

As Kai stood amidst the disarrayed gang, his breathing even, his posture unruffled, Master Feng's remaining men looked at each other, then back at their fallen comrades, and finally at the unwavering figure before them. The message was clear: they were outmatched. With a grumble of defeat, they began to help their injured, casting resentful glances at Kai but making no further moves.

Master Feng, his face a mask of simmering rage, knew when he was beaten, at least for now. "You may have won this skirmish, old man," he snarled, his voice low and dangerous, "but the docks of Quanzhou are ours. You won't find work here. Not a single coin will pass into your hand."

Kai met his gaze, his silence more potent than any retort. He had made an enemy, but he had also made a statement. As Master Feng and his bruised entourage retreated, the crowd on the docks slowly dispersed, a buzz of whispers following them.

Before Kai could turn to consider his next move, a calm and cultured voice spoke from behind him. "A remarkable display, Master. I have not seen such skill in many years."

Kai turned to see Master Li, his eyes alight with genuine admiration. "My name is Li. I deal in goods that require careful handling, and I value integrity above all else. It seems the docks have been less welcoming to you. Perhaps my establishment could benefit from a man of your… unique talents. I need a guard to ensure my shipments are handled respectfully, and my ledgers are not 'misplaced' by those with sticky fingers."

Kai looked at the merchant, then back at the bustling, still-dangerous docks. A new path had opened, promising work and a different challenge in Quanzhou's vibrant, complex city.

Part Three - The Truth

Master Kai accepted Master Li’s offer, the merchant’s keen eyes and honest demeanor a welcome change from the rough-and-tumble of the docks. His new duties began immediately. He wasn't just a guard; he was a silent, watchful presence, ensuring the secure transfer of precious silks and spices from the arriving ships to Master Li's warehouses and then to his opulent store in the city's market district.

At first, the work seemed straightforward, almost peaceful. Kai's disciplined presence was enough to deter most petty thieves and curious onlookers. While still wary, the dock gangs largely kept their distance, remembering his earlier display of skill. Yet, a subtle tension soon began to prickle the air around Master Li.

It started with minor annoyances: a cart of silks mysteriously delayed, a warehouse door found suspiciously ajar (though nothing stolen), and a whispered threat from a competitor in the bustling market. Kai noticed how Master Li's smile sometimes faltered and the quick, almost imperceptible glances he cast over his shoulder.

One brisk morning, as Kai escorted a particularly valuable shipment of embroidered fabrics through a narrow alley, a hail of rocks suddenly rained down from the rooftops. They weren't aimed to kill, but to disrupt and distract. Before Kai could fully react, a group of agile ruffians dropped from the eaves, their faces covered, their movements practiced. They were clearly after the silk.

Kai moved swiftly, his staff a blur, deflecting the rocks and fending off the attackers. He recognized a similar aggression to the dock gangs, but these individuals were more organized, less overtly thuggish. A chilling realization dawned as he drove them back: these weren't random thugs. They knew precisely what Li was transporting and when.

Later that week, a seemingly innocuous argument erupted at Master Li’s stall in the market. A rival merchant, plump and sneering, loudly accused Li of undercutting prices and selling inferior goods. The argument quickly drew a crowd, and Kai, standing stoically beside the display of shimmering fabrics, felt the subtle shift in the crowd's mood. It was an attempt to damage Li’s reputation, to incite distrust. However, Kai’s silent, imposing presence seemed to deter the situation from escalating into outright violence, forcing the rival to retreat with a frustrated huff.

However, the most concerning incident occurred during a late-night inventory check at the warehouse. As Kai supervised the stacking of crates, a shadowy figure emerged from the depths of the building, a glint of metal in his hand. This was no ordinary thief. This was an assassin, moving with deadly intent towards the oblivious Master Li.

Kai reacted instantly. His staff intercepted the blade with a sharp clang, sending sparks flying in the dim lantern light. The assassin was skilled, his movements fluid and precise, starkly contrasting with the rough brawlers Kai had faced before. The fight was swift and silent, a deadly dance in the echoing warehouse. Kai, drawing upon his deepest reserves of discipline, disarmed the attacker and subdued him, holding him captive until the city watch could be called.

The next morning, Master Li sat in his study, a somber expression on his face as he looked at Kai. "Master Kai," he began, his voice low, "I fear I have drawn you into a more perilous situation than I initially led you to believe." He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "My success in Quanzhou has earned me many rivals. Some resent my growth, others covet my trade routes, and a few simply wish to see me fail for their own gain. The assassin last night… that was the clearest sign yet. These are not mere competitors; they are true enemies."

Kai nodded, the pieces of the puzzle falling into place. The rocks, the market disruptions, and the attempt on Li's life all pointed to a coordinated campaign. "You have many enemies, Master Li," Kai stated, his voice calm, "more than friends, it seems."

Master Li looked out at the bustling city through his window. "Indeed. And now you, Master Kai, find yourself caught in a tangled web. Are you prepared for the dangers that lie ahead in Quanzhou?"

The Wandering Master

Episode 2 - THE PHANTOM SHADOW

Having brought a measure of peace to Osaki-do, Master Kai resumed his eastward journey. The cool, crisp air of the mountains gradually gave way to warmer breezes, and the lush greenery gave way to a more arid landscape. Days turned into weeks, and just as the horizon began to shimmer with heat, a stark silhouette emerged against the sky: a formidable, walled city, its gates heavy and its towers bristling with guards.

This was the city of Baoding, and an immediate sense of unease settled upon Kai as he approached. The air here was not peaceful; it hummed with quiet tension and suppressed fear. Farmers outside the walls moved with downcast eyes, their shoulders slumped under unseen burdens. When Kai finally reached the massive main gate, he noted the heavy iron portcullis, the grim-faced guards in their dark, imposing armor, and the long, weary queue of people waiting for inspection.

He learned quickly that Lord Wang Ja ruled Baoding like a man whose name was spoken only in hushed, fearful tones. Wang was known for his insatiable greed, his punitive taxes, and his brutal enforcers – a personal guard of ruthless warriors known as "The Iron Fists," but commonly whispered of as "hatchet men" due to their summary justice. They patrolled the streets with an almost theatrical display of cruelty, extorting, beating, and imprisoning citizens at Wang Jia's whim.

Kai spent his first few days observing, blending into the background. He saw families evicted from their homes for overdue taxes, merchants' goods confiscated without cause, and dissent silenced with brutal efficiency. The city, despite its grand walls, felt less like a home and more like a cage. The vibrant spirit he’d encountered in Osaki-do was absent here, replaced by a pervasive resignation. The people of Baoding were broken, their hope all but extinguished.

Witnessing such widespread suffering stirred a deep-seated resolve within Kai. His path was not merely to seek peace, but to help others find it, even if it meant confronting the very forces that stole it. Wang's tyranny was a poison seeping into the soul of this city, and Kai felt, with an undeniable certainty, that he must correct this imbalance.

He began subtly. One evening, he intervened when two Iron Fists were harassing a young woman over a paltry sum. Moving like a shadow, Kai disarmed one guard with a flick of his staff, sending his weapon clattering, and then expertly twisted the arm of the second, causing him to drop his club with a yelp. Before the bewildered guards could react, Kai had melted back into the crowd, leaving the woman safe and the enforcers looking foolish.

Word of the mysterious figure who moved like smoke spread through the city. Whispers of a silent protector, a phantom justice, sparked a flicker of hope in the oppressed. Kai continued these small acts, disrupting the hatchet men's abuses, never harming them beyond necessary restraint, but constantly humiliating them and demonstrating their vulnerability. He became a legend in the taverns and marketplaces, a symbol of defiance.

Wang, enraged by the growing unrest and the emasculation of his elite guards, ordered a city-wide lockdown and a hunt for "the phantom." The Iron Fists became even more brutal, their desperation making them reckless. This, Kai knew, was his moment.

One morning, as the Iron Fists rounded up dozens of citizens in the main square, threatening collective punishment, Kai stepped out from the crowd. His worn robes and simple staff seemed insignificant against the backdrop of their gleaming armor and menacing axes.

"These people have suffered enough," Kai's voice, though calm, resonated with authority, cutting through the tense silence.

The captain of the Iron Fists, a hulking brute named Chang Shu, sneered. "So, the phantom reveals himself. A foolish old man." He lunged, his heavy axe whistling through the air.

Kai met the attack not with brute force, but with elegant precision. He dodged, weaved, and parried, his staff deflecting blows with a ringing thud that echoed across the square. Chang Shu, accustomed to easy victories, found himself constantly off-balance, his powerful swings met with yielding resilience. Kai moved too fast, too fluidly. With a sudden, swift move, Kai hooked Chang’s axe with his staff and spun him around using the brute's momentum, sending him sprawling to the cobblestones. The axe skittered away.

The other hatchet men hesitated, shocked. They had never seen their captain so easily subdued. Kai stood over Chang Shu, not striking, but radiating an unwavering calm. "Your lord feeds on fear," he said, his voice carrying to the gathered citizens. "But fear is only strong if you let it be."

Inspired by this display, a few brave souls in the crowd began to murmur and shout. The suppressed anger of years erupted. Seeing their captain defeated, and sensing the tide turning, the remaining Iron Fists faltered. Some turned to flee, others stood frozen, their arrogance shattered.

The uprising was swift and decisive. The citizens, emboldened by Kai's courage, surged forward, overwhelming the now disorganized hatchet men. They were not seeking blood, but liberation. They disarmed the guards, confined them, and secured the city gates.

Wang Ja, holed up in his opulent palace, watched from a high window as his reign crumbled. When the furious but disciplined citizens, led by some of the city elders, finally reached his chambers, Kai was not among them. He had fulfilled his purpose.

As dawn painted the sky with hues of hope, Master Kai quietly slipped out of the city gates. He left behind a city blinking in the light of its newfound freedom, a people discovering their strength. He knew the path ahead would be long for Baoding, but they now walked it with their heads held high. Kai, the humble master, continued his journey, carrying with him the quiet satisfaction of a world nudged, ever so slightly, back towards balance.

Episode 1 - SHADOW OF THE MOUNTAIN

Master Kai, a name whispered with reverence in the dojos across the land, felt the familiar tug of wanderlust. His calloused hands yearned for the feel of a new landscape, his seasoned ears for unfamiliar sounds. So, he packed his meager belongings, his only faithful companions, his worn staff, and a heart brimming with quiet wisdom, and set off towards the fabled Tateyama Mountains.

Weeks of travel brought him to a valley nestled deep within the incredible, misty peaks. Here lay the village of Osaki-do, a peaceful haven of thatched-roofed homes and terraced rice paddies. The villagers, their faces etched with the kindness of simple living, welcomed him with open arms, offering him food and a place to rest in their humble community hall.

Kai spent his days observing their gentle routines – the rhythmic thud of the rice mill, the cheerful calls of children playing, the shared meals under the soft glow of lantern light. A profound sense of tranquility settled within him.

But this peace was a fragile thing. One crisp evening, as the stars began to pepper the inky sky, a chilling cry echoed through the valley. Then another, and another, growing in intensity. Panic rippled through Osaki-do as shadowy figures descended from the mountain paths – ninjas, their movements fluid and deadly, their blades glinting ominously in the moonlight.

These were not mere bandits. They moved with a disciplined ferocity, their targets the meager stores of grain, the few precious tools, and anything of value the villagers possessed. Fear choked the air as the villagers, unprepared and untrained for such violence, could only flee and hide.

Kai, witnessing the terror unfold, felt a familiar resolve harden within him. He had sought peace, but he could not stand idly by while innocent people suffered. Gripping his staff, he stepped out into the chaos.

The first ninja who lunged at a fleeing farmer was met with a swift, precise strike of Kai’s staff. The ninja, surprised by the sudden intervention and the unexpected force, stumbled back. Kai moved with a grace that belied his age, his movements economical yet devastatingly effective. He deflected sword thrusts with his staff, his body swaying like a willow in the wind, and countered with strikes that sent his attackers reeling.

The villagers, initially frozen in fear, watched in stunned amazement as the lone figure of Master Kai stood against the onslaught. His calm focus was a beacon in the darkness, his skill a whirlwind of controlled power. A few of the braver villagers, seeing a glimmer of hope, began to assist, throwing stones or wielding farm tools defensively.

The ninjas, accustomed to easy plunder, found themselves facing unexpected resistance. Their coordinated attacks faltered against Kai’s masterful defense. He anticipated their moves, exploited their weaknesses, and neutralized their threats with practiced ease. He didn't aim to kill, but to disable, to dissuade.

One young ninja, his mask askew after a close encounter with Kai’s staff, hesitated. He looked at the fallen forms of his comrades, the fierce but ultimately defensive posture of the villagers, and the unwavering stance of the martial arts master. Doubt flickered in his eyes.

Seeing this hesitation, Kai spoke, his voice calm amidst the clash of steel, "Your path leads only to suffering. Return to the mountain. Leave this village in peace."

His words, coupled with the undeniable display of his skill, seemed to break the ninjas' resolve. One by one, they began to retreat, melting back into the shadows from whence they came, carrying their injured and their shattered confidence.

As the last of the ninjas disappeared into the night, a heavy silence fell over Osaki-do, broken only by the relieved sobs of the villagers. They slowly emerged from their hiding places, their eyes wide with gratitude as they looked at Master Kai.

They rushed to him, offering their thanks, their voices filled with awe. Kai nodded, his face etched with a quiet satisfaction. He had not sought conflict, but he had not shied away from it when the innocent were threatened.

In the days that followed, Kai remained in Osaki-do. He taught the villagers simple self-defense techniques, demonstrating how to utilize their tools and surroundings to protect themselves. He shared his wisdom, not just in martial arts, but in the importance of community and resilience.

When the time came for Kai to continue his journey, the villagers gathered to bid him farewell. Their faces, once etched with fear, now held a newfound confidence. They knew that even in the face of darkness, courage and skill could make a difference. Master Kai, the wandering warrior, left Osaki-do knowing that he had not just defended a village, but had also planted the seeds of self-reliance in the hearts of its people. The Tateyama Mountains held their peace once more, a peace that now felt a little stronger, a little more secure, thanks to the quiet master who had passed through.
