As a youth and high school coach for close to 20 years, I have a very similar view. I believe there are exceptions. What are your thoughts?

youth wrestling is broken because it is rushed

Youth wrestling didn’t get ruined by kids.
It got ruined by adults who couldn’t wait.

We took a long-term sport
and forced short-term expectations onto it.

Kids are cutting weight at nine.
Chasing medals at ten.
Being labeled “elite” at eleven.

And then everyone is shocked when they quit at thirteen.

Wrestling is a sport that rewards patience.
But youth wrestling is built around urgency.

Win now.
Post now.
Prove something now.

Instead of learning how to move,
kids are learning how to survive matches.

Instead of building positions,
they’re memorizing tricks.

Instead of loving the process,
they’re learning that losing equals failure.

You can’t rush a nervous system.
You can’t rush mat awareness.
You can’t rush toughness.

Those things come from time under pressure.
Not medals.
Not rankings.
Not private lessons every night.

Youth wrestling should look boring.
Repetitive.
Slow.

If it looks impressive early,
it’s usually hiding cracks that show up later.

One of my favorite Holiday gifts! Alum OWC wrestlers on the mat sharing their knowledge with our up n comers. These wrestlers shine on and off the mat, traveling the country to wrestle the best of the best. When they get to a certain level it’s inevitable that they will have to find rooms where “iron sharpens iron” but the bonds never break and Coach Sosa will always be your coach and root for you no matter where you go!
