Today was a day when I just smiled. It wasn't putting out a fire. It wasn't wondering if it was or or solving a problem due to a question asked in interviewing. It wasn't how to reply to an charge. Now, all those are items on which I get calls, and what I do help to solve. This was different. This was planning.

A smart business owner , and fellow Safety Harbor Chamber member, is planning to hire--IN A FEW MONTHS-- and wants to do it right. We talked about vision, mission, values, policies, compliance, job descriptions, classifications, interviewing, posters, I-9s, offer letters--and that was the start. We'll continue the discussion next month.

Florida HR Alert: A Florida Employment Law Update

A Florida employment law update took effect today, July 1, and it's one that HR professionals and employers should have on their radar. The update to the Florida Civil Rights Act doesn't change what discrimination is or add new protected classes. Instead, it clarifies the deadline for filing a lawsuit after the administrative process has been completed. It may sound procedural, but clear deadlines matter for employers, employees, HR professionals, and legal counsel alike.

Here's the practical takeaway. If the Florida Commission on Human Relations or the EEOC issues a qualifying determination or Right-to-Sue Notice, an employee generally has one year to file a lawsuit if they choose to pursue one. If neither agency takes action within 180 days, the law now establishes an 18-month deadline from the date the administrative complaint was filed. The result is greater clarity and fewer questions about when a claim may move from the administrative process into the courts. It doesn't change an employer's responsibility to prevent discrimination, investigate concerns promptly, or respond appropriately. It simply establishes clearer timelines for when legal action may be brought.

Employment law isn't always about sweeping new regulations. Sometimes the most meaningful updates are procedural changes that affect how and when organizations respond.
