The derailment of train cars filled with vinyl chloride that devastated East Palestine, Ohio in early February reminds us of the importance of transitioning towards systematic solutions to curtail plastic production.

Vinyl chloride is a highly unstable, toxic chemical used primarily to create polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is widely used in automotive parts, packaging products, pipes, construction materials, furniture and more. According to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board, the derailment was caused by a hot axle that heated a train car carrying polypropylene plastic pellets. To prevent an explosion, responders burned over 100,000 gallons of vinyl chloride, creating the massive black plumes of smoke, and sending airborne chemicals into the air and nearby waterways. Concerns remain about the safety of residents and first responders, economic stability and environmental impacts of the region.
