The Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police is a dynamic association, forever changing through the influence and actions of individual members who bring their expertise and an impetus for improvement in the criminal justice system. We believe that our concerted efforts will improve the police profession and the quality of life for the citizens of the great state of Michigan. Founded in 1924, the MACP is governed by a 19 member Board of Directors, including a President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Third Vice President, and Immediate Past President along with 14 district representatives representing all geographical areas of our state. Each association official holds office for one year but may be re-elected. The association is guided by its Constitution, and Article I, Sec. 2 provides for the purposes of the MACP: The purposes of the Association shall be to advance the science and art of police administration and crime prevention, to develop and disseminate approved administrative and technical practices and promote their use in police work, to foster police cooperation, unity of action, and the exchange of information and experience among police officers of this state, to bring about the recruitment and training in the police profession of qualified persons, to seek legislation of benefit to the citizens of the state or law enforcement in general, and to encourage adherence of all police officers to high professional standards of conduct. The Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police is incorporated as a 501.C (6) non-profit corporation. In addition to the MACP, a companion corporation, the Michigan Law Enforcement Educational Fund, Inc. is utilized by MACP committees to fund their activities. The M.L.E.E.F, Inc. is a 501C (3) corporation which can accept tax deductible donations from individuals and corporations. The MACP enjoys an extremely active committee structure. Committees address specific law enforcement issues, provide awards, sponsor seminars, offer scholarships, create publications, formulate state-wide conferences and a whole gamut of activities in between. The MACP also appoints members as liaison to other state and federal organizations and to State of Michigan commissions.

Today, on Thank a Police Officer Day, the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police recognizes the men and women who serve communities across our state with the professionalism that is expected and deserved.

Every day, Michigan’s law enforcement officers answer calls, solve problems, support victims, and step into situations most people hope they never have to face.

Today we wrapped up the Fall 2026 MACP Police Executives’ and New Chiefs’ School.

We closed the week with one of the most valuable sessions of the program, a Chiefs Panel featuring Chief Shahin, Chief Brentar, Chief Simpson, and Chief Andres.

They shared their experience, their passion for the profession, and candid answers to every question the class put in front of them.

At some point, every chief encounters a situation they haven’t faced before. Having a network of experienced colleagues willing to share what they’ve learned is invaluable.

Thank you to our Chiefs Panel and to all of the instructors who gave their time and expertise this week.

On behalf of the MACP, we offer our sincere condolences to the Clairborne County Sheriff's Department, Mississippi, for the loss of Deputy Sheriff Terrain Bailey. Our prayers are with the family and friends of Deputy Sheriff Bailey during this difficult time.

Deputy Sheriff Terrian Bailey was shot and killed while responding to a disturbance call near a local convenience store off Highway 18, near Hermanville, shortly after midnight.

You don’t need a title to lead.

Some of the most influential people in a police organization aren’t sitting in the chief’s office.

They’re the officers other officers turn to. The sergeants who set expectations by what they tolerate and what they don’t. The employees who step forward when something needs to be done instead of waiting to be asked.

Strong organizations don’t begin developing leaders after someone gets promoted.

They identify leadership potential early, give people opportunities to grow and create a culture where leadership is expected at every level.

This week we’re working with current and future police executives at MACP’s Police Executives' & New Chiefs’ School. But developing the next generation of leaders has to begin long before someone becomes a chief.

Yesterday we welcomed the Fall 2026 class of MACP’s Police Executives’ and New Chiefs’ School for five days focused on one of the most challenging jobs in law enforcement, leading an organization.

Being a successful police executive requires much more than operational experience. Chiefs are responsible for people, budgets, labor issues, organizational culture, community relationships, professional standards and decisions that can shape an agency for years.

This week is about helping leaders prepare for those responsibilities and connecting them with other executives they can turn to long after the school ends.

Never Forget.

Today, the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police joins our nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honoring the extraordinary courage of the first responders who ran toward danger.

We remember the nearly 3,000 lives taken that day. We remember the police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and countless others who answered the call. And we remember the spirit of unity and service that brought our country together in the days that followed.

On this 25th anniversary, their courage, sacrifice, and service remain with us.

Congratulations Gerrish Township Police Department

At the MACP 2026 Fall Law Enforcement Accreditation Conference last week held in Mt. Pleasant, Chief Eric Muszynski, Sgt. John Ellis and Accreditation Manager (Administrative Clerk) Julie Hill attended the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Committee (MLEAC) compliance review hearings and are pleased to announce that the Gerrish Township Police Department has achieved their initial accreditation.
This three-year process involved a comprehensive review of the agencies policies, procedures, and professional practices and will be an on-going process of continuing to review the standards set by MLEAC, amending department policies and procedures, and providing proofs to meet those standards to achieve re-accreditation status every three years.
Gerrish Township Police Department is proud to join the other 107 accredited law enforcement agencies in Michigan who demonstrate continued commitment, accountability, and transparency to provide the highest level of professional service to their communities.
An award will be formally presented to the Department at an upcoming Gerrish Township Board meeting.
