KALI: MORE THAN A WEAPON. A LEGACY PASSED FORWARD.
When Guru Cass Magda steps onto our mats October 17 & 18 to teach Filipino Kali, there is a much bigger story behind the sticks you will see in his hands.
It's a story that connects G**o Dan Inosanto, Cass Magda, Sifu Dan Timlin and generations of martial artists who have kept these arts alive by passing them forward.
G**O DAN INOSANTO
A student and close associate of Bruce Lee, Dan Inosanto became one of the most influential teachers in bringing Filipino Martial Arts to martial artists around the world.
For generations of JKD practitioners, Kali became an extraordinary laboratory for developing attributes that cross over into so many areas of martial arts.
Among the martial artists who immersed themselves deeply in this knowledge was Cass Magda.
CASS MAGDA
Cass trained extensively with G**o Dan Inosanto, eventually becoming his personal assistant and traveling training partner.
For years they trained, traveled and taught together.
Cass didn't simply attend a few seminars.
He spent years on the mat absorbing the movement, concepts, training methods and details that can only come from sustained hands-on instruction.
He then continued his own journey training with respected Filipino and Indonesian martial arts teachers and dedicating decades to teaching Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Martial Arts and Silat.
And then there is another part of this story that is especially meaningful to us.
SIFU DAN TIMLIN
Dan Timlin also believed in seeking knowledge at its source.
Long before online instruction and instant access to martial arts videos, Dan traveled, trained and studied under G**o Dan Inosanto.
He brought that knowledge home to Michigan.
He taught it.
He shared it.
And he continued bringing instructors and martial artists together so his students could experience knowledge beyond the walls of their own school.
That philosophy became part of the foundation of Mid-Michigan Academy of Martial Arts.
And it continues today.
That is why having Cass Magda back in Michigan means so much to us.
This isn't simply:
“Here's a stick. Learn a combination.”
It represents something much greater.
Teacher → Student → Teacher → Student.
Knowledge handed down.
Knowledge tested.
Knowledge preserved.
Knowledge shared.
And on October 17 & 18, YOU have an opportunity to step into that continuing story.
