What if the business you’re building is actually taking you further away from the life you wanted in the first place?

This conversation was a vulnerable one for me. 💙

For the last 10 years, entrepreneurship has looked like a lot of different things. Divorce work by day and weddings by night. Building a successful event business and eventually having the courage to walk away from it. Creating Reach Retreat . Going into business with my husband. Growing t5plumbing from one truck into a team of 9. Raising kids. Hiring employees. Making expensive mistakes. Taking risks before we felt financially ready. And learning, over and over again, that growth doesn’t always look the way you thought it would.

But underneath all of it has been one question:

Am I building a business that serves our life, or a life that serves our business?

Losing my 17-year-old sister Morgan changed the way I looked at time forever. It changed how I thought about family, work, purpose, and what I was willing to sacrifice in the name of “success.”

I don’t have all of this figured out. I’ve experienced burnout. I’ve made decisions that cost us money. We’ve been robbed. I’ve had to learn how different it is to lead a team versus simply being responsible for myself. There have been seasons where stepping forward required more faith than comfort.

But I know this: I want the businesses we build to create something bigger than income.

I want them to create jobs.
I want our employees to be able to prioritize their families.
I want to continue to build meaningful community
I want to give back.
I want my kids to see that you can work incredibly hard without allowing work to become the entire point of your life.

And I want to keep having the courage to redesign things when the life we’ve built no longer matches the life we believe we’re called to live.

I’m incredibly grateful to Kelsie Kae at Stevie Social for giving me the space to share so much of this story on Business That Speaks.
