People have a tendency to look at training through a singular, and often tribal lens.

The reality is that there are many variables to consider when choosing exercises. Some choose to deal with that by dismissing the importance of exercises altogether rather than invest the mental effort into their exercise selection. I prefer the opposite approach of understanding all the variables and how they interact so I can choose the exercises that will best suit the client and their goals, with all things considered.

Take this tricep exercise for example:
- You could choose it because it’s a good way to bias more of the medial head of the tricep.
- You could choose it because it’s one of the few ways to lead deep elbow flexion
- You could choose it because it’s one of the few bilateral options you have that doesn’t cause discomfort, or fatigue in some inappropriate area.
- You could choose it because it may have carry over to other pressing motions that the client is trying to improve
- You could choose it simply to be complimentary to other variations you are using.
- You could even choose it just because you know it’s a quality exercise that can be used for novelty that keeps your client interested and enjoying the training.

As a coach/trainer, you should have the power to both maximize the results as well as the experience of the training. A better understanding of exercise qualities and selection is an essential element for accomplishing both of those.

Do you have a well thought out “why” behind your exercises choices?

You can learn more about the technique and application of these exercises with @n1.education courses and the @n1.training exercise library. 04/21/2023

It’s not that anyone’s doing things wrong, but we can all do things better, and knowing why is what separates some of us.
