On September 6, 1995, Cal Ripken Jr. played his 2,131st consecutive game, surpassing Lou Gehrig’s record that had stood for 56 years.

Ripken homered during the game and received an unforgettable 22-minute standing ovation from the Baltimore crowd.

The same date also brought Joe Kelley going a remarkable 9-for-9 across a doubleheader in 1894, rookie Bill McCahan throwing a no-hitter in 1947, Jim Hickman becoming the first player in his franchise’s history to hit three home runs in one game in 1965 and Pedro Martínez recording career strikeout No. 3,000 in 2007.
