The year was 1909. Over 3000 spectators were in OKC to watch Denmark's Battling Nelson (boxer on left) defend his World Lightweight title. It wasn't until 62 years later Oklahoma had its next world title fight. In 1971, Oklahoma native Brian Kelly Burden (Chickasha) challenged, but lost, to Bob Foster in the World Light Heavyweight Championship fought at OKC State Fair Arena. The referee was Oklahoman Earle Keel, the first American Indian to referee a world title fight.

Oklahoma has always had a great history in boxing. In 1936, the great Max Baer, former Heavyweight Champion of the World (68-13, 59 KOs), fought in Oklahoma three times -- won all three fights. Fought Jim Merriott at the Farmer's Market in OKC (KO'd Merriott in 2nd), fought Junior Munsell in Tulsa, and Cecil Smith in Ada, OK. Here's a clip from his most famous fight against Cinderella Man James Braddock. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV2z7kmanAM Max is also the father of actor Max Baer, Jr., Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies.
