Iaido is the art of drawing and cutting with the Japanese sword. It is one of the oldest traditional sword arts in Japan.

For nearly 450 years, since the founding of iaido by Hayashizaki Jinsuke Minamoto no Shigenobu in present-day Murayama City, Tateoka, Yamagata Prefecture, this technique has been passed from one generation to the next in an unbroken succession of teachers and students. Today, a long-time project in the works came to fruition as students from the OKC Iaido Dojo added nafuda (name tags) to the nafuda kake at Windsong Dojo. This project would not have been possible without the help of our very own talented wood burner, Natalie, who hand crafted each nafuda.

Today’s practice marks a bitter sweet moment in the history of our school as the last practice for Ian Weathers. He began training with a study group in 2013 and continued at the OKC Iaido Dojo until today. In that time, he has also taken up the study of kendo alongside iaido. He will be relocating to take on new professional roles this winter. We wish him the best in his new adventures and the best of luck with his own study group to lead and grow!
