Due to recent court rulings (like the Pavia case), many JUCO athletes can now get an extra year of eligibility at an NCAA school, effectively meaning two years at JUCO don't automatically use up their four years, allowing for a full four years at a 4-year school, though this has legal uncertainty and waivers, with the NCAA appealing, so it's a developing situation, not a universal guarantee. The rule change primarily helps those who competed at JUCO and would have exhausted eligibility soon, creating opportunities, but future JUCO athletes must understand the traditional rules still often apply unless specific waivers are granted.
