Soreness every day is not progress. It’s proof your program is broken.

Recovery is where strength is actually built. Not in the gym. In the days after training.

Constant soreness means your nervous system never resets and your joints stay inflamed. Performance stalls.

At 45+, you should feel stronger and more capable each week, not beat up and worn down.

This is what progressive, systematic and comprehensive training looks and sounds like. Train to live > Live to train

Most people skip cardio because they heard it kills gains.

They focus entirely on lifting. Which is the right instinct. Until it is not.

Here is what happens when you have no aerobic base.

Your recovery between sets slows down. You need longer rest periods to feel ready for the next one. Your recovery between sessions slows down. You carry fatigue into Monday's session from Friday's. And over time, that accumulated fatigue starts to drag your performance down.

You are not tired because you are training too hard. You are tired because your engine cannot support the work you are asking it to do.

Zone 2 cardio fixes that.

Zone 2 is not a threat to your strength. It is the foundation that makes your strength training sustainable. A strong aerobic base means faster recovery between sets, faster recovery between sessions, and less accumulated fatigue over time.

It is not about burning calories. It is about building the engine that everything else runs on.

Here is how to add it without touching your strength gains.

Keep sessions separate. Four to six hours apart at minimum. Cardio before lifting compromises your strength output. Cardio immediately after compromises your recovery. Give each session room to do its job.

Find your Zone 2 pace. If you can hold a full conversation comfortably without breathing hard, you are in Zone 2. If you are struggling to talk, you are above it. Walk, cycle, row, or swim. The mode does not matter. The intensity does.

Build volume gradually. Start with two sessions of twenty to thirty minutes per week. Add ten minutes every two weeks. Work toward three hours of total Zone 2 volume per week over eight to twelve weeks. The aerobic system responds to consistency over time, not intensity in a single session.

One of my clients added three Zone 2 sessions per week alongside his strength program. Twenty-five minutes each. Walking on an incline. Nothing dramatic.

After eight weeks his recovery between sets had improved significantly. His resting heart rate had dropped nine beats. His strength numbers kept moving up. He did not lose a pound of muscle.

He just built a better engine.

If you have been avoiding cardio because you are afraid of losing what you have built, this is your sign to add it.

Zone 2 is not the enemy. It is the missing piece.

DM me the word CARDIO and I will send you the exact Zone 2 protocol I use with my clients so you can start building your aerobic base without touching your strength gains.

If you're tired of starting over...stop quitting.

I've carried more weight than you'll ever have to.

Literally and figuratively.

30+ years in military culture, tactical athletics, and rugby will teach you what real hardship feels like.
Pain. Exhaustion. The kind of physical demand most people never come close to in their lifetime.

So when I tell my clients "I know how you feel," | mean it.

Strength training will test you long before it changes you.
My clients who build real, lasting capability aren't the ones with perfect genetics.

They're the ones who don't negotiate with themselves on hard days.

No excuses. No "I'II start Monday." No bargaining when the reps get heavy.

Just showing up and doing the work anyway.
That's the whole game after 45.
