In an area full of barns, each with its own approach, riders’ needs vary just as widely. At Chastain Mist, my 47 years in the saddle and 36 years of teaching have shown me that great coaching is as much about mentoring as it is about riding. Some riders choose a competition path, others dream of making horses their profession. Still others are looking for something quieter, a therapeutic space to build confidence, find peace, and experience the unique partnership that horses offer. Every one of those paths is valued equally here. Our role isn’t to decide what success looks like for your rider, it’s to help them discover it for themselves. Some of my former students are now parents, bringing their own children through our gates. That kind of trust isn’t built in a season, it’s built over decades of consistency and care and relationships that last long after the riding lessons end. Our horses are true partners, cared for with exceptional nutrition, thoughtful conditioning, regular body work, and the very best management. Healthy, happy horses create confident riders. Our students learn these principles too. They don’t simply learn how to ride, they learn how to understand, respect, and care for the horse beneath them, Safety here isn’t a slogan, it’s woven through every decision we make. One of my greatest responsibilities is protecting a child’s confidence. Every lesson is carefully planned, every pairing is intentional. Every transition, from a child’s first walk to learning the trot, from trot to canter, and every milestone after that, is approached with patience and intention. We never rush the process. We never ask a child to prove their courage. When children feel safe, they become brave, and bravery opens up so much growth, not just in riding, but in life. Communication matters just as much. When you call, we answer. When you text, we respond. If plans change and you need to reschedule or, you just need a quick answer, we’re on it. We believe reliability and clear communication are part of the experience every family deserves. We offer group lessons, privates, summer camps, one-on-one groundwork and non-riding experiences, hands-on horsemanship education and training clinics, with individualized guidance for riders of every age and goal. If you’re looking for more than a riding lesson, if you want a place where horses come first, and confidence is protected, safety is intentional, and every rider is encouraged to follow the path that’s right for them, we would love to hear from you. Reach out, tell us about your rider, and we’ll help you find the best fit.

Gah!!! Look what they did! My intermediate students had their first show at Sunny Meadow Farm where we repeatedly talked about showing up for the experience and not ribbons. Even though they kept that in mind the whole time, they still placed! I could not be prouder of them!

Tomorrow is show day! Students are responsible for cleaning and packing their tack, bathing their horses, and packing their horse’s hay. I’m incredibly proud of this team!

So proud of these riders! Several months ago they set a goal to be able to go XC at Sunny Meadow. They have worked incredibly hard on handling horses from the ground up so they would be ready for anything that came their way.
From cleaning their tack to loading the trailer to riding horses in a new location and jumping obstacles they have never seen before to after ride care and cleaning the trailer at the end of the day, they rocked it!

This is the work of my students ages 11 to 14. Completely on their own, they cleaned their tack, and loaded up the trailer for their cross-country schooling tomorrow. I won’t even have to double check that they packed everything. They are amazing! (there’s a lot more than the photo shows 😉)

Today a few of the intermediate riders, who started their riding journey here, arrived at 7am. They cleaned their tack and organized their tack trunks. They had a training session with two young horses, where they learned training elements that go into developing a youngster, included riding a green 3 yr old under trainer supervision. They then rode horses they lease, working on skills they need to master before their next test. From there they applied fly spray to some of the retired horses and filled waters. We then tacked up horses and went on a trail ride, discussing future equine career options and planning out the summer (XC schooling, shows, and growing their equine business.) These kids are not even teenagers yet, and the education and experience they are getting is so valuable. I wish I had had the same guidance at that age, but it is one of my greatest joys to share my 48 years of knowledge with them. These wonderful kids are the future of our equestrian community, and it is beyond fulfilling knowing that the horses they work with throughout their life will be in excellent hands.
