Love can travel across distance…
but feelings still show up.
When children are separated from a parent, their behavior often tells the story their words cannot.
The tantrums, the clinginess, the big reactions…
it’s not just behavior. It’s stress. It’s confusion. It’s missing someone they love.
I wrote a new article about children's behavior after parent separation and how we can respond with understanding instead of frustration.
Because when we look underneath the behavior, we find a child who is trying to feel safe again.

Children Behavior After Parent Separation: Love Travels Far… But Feelings Still Show Up
Love can travel across distance, but feelings still show up. For children, those feelings often come out through behavior. This piece gently explores what children are really communicating and how we can meet them with understanding.

Today I had the honor of sitting with 88 therapists from around the world.
There’s something powerful about that…
so many people who spend their days holding others, choosing to pause and care for themselves.
This work we do is meaningful.
But it can also be heavy.
Today was a reminder…
we don’t have to carry it alone.

Today I was at Early Learning Center at Skinner handing out the book Until Mama Comes Home. Monday I was at Early Learning Center at Gateway. I am overwhelmed with how many teachers, staff, caregivers, grandparents and parents who have said this book is needed. This started with trying to find a resource to use. It was just an idea or thought. I’m honored to see it make an impact.
Again thank you to Nebraska Early Childhood Collaborative for making this happen.

Today I’m at a Kennedy Early Learning Center, and this feels wonderful.
I’m handing out copies of Until Mama Comes Home—books that were purchased and sponsored by the Nebraska Early Childhood Collaborative.
What I love most about this moment is that these stories are reaching families right where they are. Some of these children know what it feels like to be away from someone they love… and now they have something they can hold onto, something that helps them make sense of that feeling.
This is why I wrote it.
Not just to tell a story—but to support connection, comfort, and those small but powerful moments between children and the people who love them.
Grateful to do this work. 💛

Sometimes the hardest thing for a child to understand is why someone they love isn’t there.
Until Mama Comes Home was written with military families in mind, but the truth is many children experience separation from someone they love.
A parent might be away because of:
• deployment
• work travel
• divorce or shared custody
• incarceration
• illness or hospital stays
• foster care placement
For young children, distance can feel confusing and scary.
This story helps children remember something important:
💛 Love doesn’t disappear when someone is far away.
🌙 Connection can travel across distance.
🫶 Families can stay emotionally close even when they can’t be physically together.
If you care for a child navigating separation, I hope this book becomes a gentle reminder that love travels far.
