Finding your Y is one thing. But finding your WHY is another. What’s yours?
For Donell, a member at our Downtown location, motivation goes beyond fitness. And together, can create a positive chain reaction unlike any other.
When the struggle is real, remember: You never know who you might inspire just by simply showing up, time and time again.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Long before today’s wellness centers, youth sports leagues, and community programs, the Omaha YMCA at 17th & Harney Streets stood as one of the city’s great gathering places.
In the early 1900s, four sculpted “Atlas” figures framed the building’s entrance in dramatic archways—an architectural symbol of strength, growth, and the YMCA’s commitment to building healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
Inside, members found far more than a gym. Bowling leagues filled the lower levels, friendships formed in shared spaces and the dormitories, and generations of Omahans passed through its doors in search of community.
The Omaha YMCA’s roots date back to 1866, when the organization first formed downtown on 12th Street between Farnam and Douglas.

May is National Water Safety Month, and our newest blog post is live.
There’s a unique side of motherhood that happens around water. The fun parts are easy to love. The harder parts—you never really turn them off.
As both an aquatics professional and mom, Ashley—our association support director of aquatics—shares a few of the water safety reminders she carries with her for every water adventure: https://metroymca.org/phones-down-eyes-up
Because around water, the smallest moments of attention can make the biggest difference.

A growing challenge in youth sports is the loss of what matters most—our kids’ enjoyment, growth, and confidence in the very spaces meant to nurture them.
When adult behavior brings pressure, criticism, or ego into the game, it changes the experience—and quietly contributes to the decline in participation.
69% of referees say sportsmanship is only getting worse.
We have the power to change that. Take the pledge to create more positive experiences for all: 👉 https://positivecoach.org/take-back-sports/
Join us and ESPN’s Take Back Sports initiative to ensure sports are welcoming, age-appropriate, and fun for everyone—no matter their background, skill level, or financial situation.

Youth sports should put kids first—building character, confidence, and teamwork in a positive environment. From now through Friday, May 2, you can help make that possible for many more.

Your gift helps ensure programs stay focused on encouragement, sportsmanship, and growth — not pressure — so every child has the chance to develop skills and feel supported. As one of our Y families expressed:
“The YMCA puts kids first by focusing on teamwork, sportsmanship, and encouragement rather than competition.”
