DAISHO — Never Without Both Swords

The most dangerous samurai in the village left his deadliest weapon at the door every night.

When he came home late, he knelt at the genkan. As tradition demanded, his katana — the long sword the village feared and his enemies knew — was left resting against the wood.

His work outside was done.

But his hand never left the other.

Inside, his wife and son were sleeping peacefully. The house was dark, quiet, and safe. Still, the wakizashi remained at his obi.

A young student once asked, "Master, why do you still carry the short sword inside your own home? Who is there to fight here?"

The master smiled and tapped the wakizashi.

"The katana is how I face the world. It is honor, duty, and work. I can leave it at the door, because the world can wait."

"But this one is how I face myself. It is my choice, my conscience, and my promise to protect when no one is watching."

"A samurai can put down his war, but never his soul."

They say only a samurai could wear the daisho. Not because of the law, but because only a samurai understood this:

One sword is for how others see you.
The other is for who you are when you are alone.

Never without both.
