It all started in 1994, when our founder, Randy, was approached by his brother-in-law, a former Junior player in Finland, with a broken carbon fiber stick that had just passed its warranty.

With a background in aerospace and a passion for problem-solving, Randy took on the challenge and attempted a repair. It wasn’t perfect, but it sparked an idea that wouldn’t leave him.

Fast forward a few years, and Randy found himself running a boat repair business in Port Alberni, BC, when he noticed more and more hockey families struggling to afford new sticks. One night, with six broken sticks on his workbench, he had a breakthrough—an innovative hollow internal shaft repair that restored the stick’s original feel and flex.

Meet the Technician: 11 Things You Might Not Know About Matt Moragues, Integral Hockey Midwest Stick Repair

What’s your name, where are you based?
Matt Moragues, Integral Hockey Midwest Stick Repair. Omaha, Nebraska.

How did you first get started with Integral Hockey?
My business partner, Spencer, and I were longtime customers. Both our sons play AAA and were breaking 8–10 sticks per season. The local owner was selling, and after seeing the value firsthand, we jumped on the opportunity.

What area do you represent and what do you love most about it?
We represent Nebraska, Sioux City IA, and now Kansas City. We love helping keep hockey affordable. My favourite part? Seeing players surprised they can’t tell the stick was ever broken.

What’s your favourite kind of stick repair to do?
I like shaft repairs for the speed, but as a former carpenter, I enjoy the detail of blade repairs. Watching a mangled blade come back to life is awesome.

What’s the most challenging stick repair you’ve done?
Goalie sticks with the internal spine. They take more time and precision, but finishing them feels great.

When you aren’t repairing sticks, what do you enjoy doing?
I spend time with family. My daughter swims and plays softball, so we stay busy year-round. I also like home projects and volunteering.

One piece of advice for young players?
Work hard and enjoy it. Hockey is more than a game—it’s a community. Make the most of every minute on the ice.

Funniest hockey moment?
One of our kids skated out for warmup with no stick. Didn’t notice until the puck dropped. Group chat legend.

Who taught you how to skate?
My dad. I didn’t play organized hockey until adulthood, but now I’m hooked.

Favourite player growing up?
Wayne Gretzky. The Great One—enough said.

What do you love most about hockey?
The grind, the friendships, and being part of something bigger than yourself.
