I cringe when I hear someone say that
baseball is their life. Baseball is not even in my top 5.
In fact, if you want to be a great baseball
player, it shouldn’t be in your top 5 either.
Here’s what I think the order should be and
then I’ll explain why this priority system will
actually make you better player.
Faith
Family
Health
Academics
Social life
Faith: Self Confidence and Believing in Yourself is critical. In LIFE times get tough and you need something to pull on and bring structure to your thoughts.
Family: Spending time with Family is an investment. The relationship and experiences will keep you grounded and family also helps you remember the priorities in life. Family in the crowd rooting you on also gives you someone to talk about the game afterwards.
Health: Eating right and exercising is critical to stay healthy. People (kids) are indoors twice as much as they were 10 years ago. Got to keep moving and with strength and mobility your game will improve.
Academics: Coachable kids become employable adults. Having a sharp mind allows you to understand the game and become more Coachable. What happens after baseball has to be a discussion. You can also create and accomplish goals with school. This is a champion behavior.
Social Life: This keeps your friends around and will eventually start your family. When you don't invest in having some fun it builds up and you can do one of two things. You will either hate what you are "having to do" (play baseball) or you will go crazy and squeeze all the fun in on a binge. This generally leads to trouble and you sacrifice some other priorities.
Remember, Baseball is a Game.

I had a great conversation with a fellow parent/coach about How money destroys the purity of the game. When you Pay to play baseball you take the learning curve out of consideration and replace it with expedited expectations. Paying for lessons, equipment, instruction, investing the time, uniforms, and paying for the tournaments and travel becomes an ROI issue that young minds don't care about. What is the WHY? It needs to be about the game and the lessons the game can teach and not measuring commitment levels with dollar signs?
Do you always get what you pay for? I have met a broke accountant and I have met strong business people who are currently stay at home Moms. My point is, coaching the youth isn't about your personal accolades, it's about your ability to communicate proper instruction and that instruction can be translated onto the feild. The kids personal success determines the quality of the coaching. Think of this before you hand over your hard earned money. If you need lessons or training the YARD has a stable of coaches ready to help.
