Back Country Leather

Back Country Leather Custom Hand Made Leather Holsters and Accessories Back Country Leather holsters are individually handmade here in the USA.

Our pancake style holsters are made out of 4 pieces of leather, laminated together and completely hand sewn around the perimeter. Our inside the waistband holsters are made out of 2 pieces of leather laminated together and sewn around the perimeter. They have high a quality powder coated clip that secures the holster to your pants for the utmost in flexibility and comfort. The advantage that our holsters have over the traditional one piece holster designs is that we use thinner leather, laminated together which gives it greater strength and retention properties than a single piece of leather, plus, our holsters are thinner and lighter weight, which translates into a more comfortable holster. One other major advantage to using multiple plies of leather is that since the rough or “flesh” side of the leather is glued to each other, the grain side or smooth side is both on the outside and inside of the holster, which protects the finish of your expensive firearm and permits a smooth draw. Our holsters are available for most Pistols and Revolvers in your choice of black, brown or saddle tan finishes.

After the holster is completely dry, I edge coat the edges (paint) then apply a top coat to seal the leather. Then a light buff and it's ready to go. This is a good holster when total concealment is not a concern. Great for hiking, riding on a quad or horseback. There's a hammer thong to keep the firearm secure in the holster, it just didn't make it in the last picture ! Lol This pattern can be modified to fit almost any handgun .

Since this holster has some stamping on it, and it's not a retention type holster, I didn't do any hard moulding on it but I did wet the holster and let it dry with a 1911 mould gun. Takes at least 24 hours to dry. Longer in the winter. I don't use heat lamps or oven boxes to speed the drying process. I prefer to allow the holster to air dry

Now I'm not a very good photographer, and I did forget to get pictures of some of the steps. After I dye the leather, it must sit again for at least 12 hours, then I glue the liner in, trim and sand the edges then sew the holster on my cowboy 3200 harness stitcher. Much faster than sewing by hand !

After any stamping, I put a coat of oil on the leather, then let it sit for at least 12 hours so the oil can evenly distribute through the leather, then I dye it

The next step is if I'm going to do any stamping or tooling is case (wet) the leather so it will take the impression of the stamp design. Now since this holster is for me, I don't use the best pc for my personal stuff. This leather was cut from the belly area of the hide. The belly can be a little thinner and stretchy and not stamp quite as well

I've had some people ask how I go about making a holster. Mostly trial and error. I make my own patterns, but I do look at other people's work for inspiration. I then make a paper pattern which involves a lot of time and paper !. Then when I think it will work, I cut out the leather. I usually buy my leather a side at a time
