The Duck Bleat Buck and his final swim.
A 2020 hunt to remember that literally gives me chills when I think about it.This hunt started the night of November 20th when I couldn’t find my doe call. My youngest son was playing with my duck call and it almost sounded like a doe 💡. I started practicing with the duck call til I was satisfied with the sound at 1am. I then took a three hour nap and headed to the camp. Me and my best friend debated for an hour as to where I should go. He suggested a spot where he saw some good buck sign only 100 yards from one of my bear sites. I took his advice and decided to try a new spot away from a stand or blind. I parked the ATV roughly a km from my trail going to where I was planning on sitting. I walked in the trail slowly only taking one or two steps then stopping and listening to my surroundings. I took 1.5 hours to get 400 yards down the trail. The forest began to lighten up as I arrived to my location. I took a few minutes to open my chair quietly and made sure not to make any unnatural sounds. I sat in my chair and realized that my best shooting lane to my left had some dead branches blocking my lane. I decided to be a buck for a minute and broke the branches as if I was a rutting buck smashing a tree. I waited 3 minutes and then used my duck/doe call. I heard a break in the distance towards the river.I then gave another duck bleat and before I could set the call down I could hear him coming. The direction he was coming from was directly on the other side of a huge pine in front of me. As his steps came closer and louder I knew that this was a buck. Just mainly for the reason I called him in I was prepared to take this buck without really judging age class. I raised my crossbow as slow as possible. I saw his nose come into view going right towards my freshly made shooting lane. He was only 10 yards away quartering towards me. (Not ideal shot) His shoulder filled my scope at 5 yards as I squeezed the trigger. I should have aimed slightly ahead because he was coming or I should have grunted to stop him. I saw the damage that the rage broad head did to the side facing me but it was back.I was very confident that he would not be far from the way he took off. We gave him 2.5 hours just to be safe. He ended up going 400yards downhill with the trail ending at the rivers edge. At this point I was beyond worried. We looked across the the river trying to see if we could see him. I saw the damage from the shot and I knew he had to be somewhere. I started looking downstream and luckily he snagged an a big rock going down the rapids. He made it most the way across the river from the downhill momentum. It was the coldest swim of my life . You know you have a great friend when he is willing to go into freezing rapids to retrieve a buck. I was very thankful and happy to retrieve this buck and the memories will stay with me forever.
