The idea behind that is to have a low gear ratio reel I think 3-4 to 1 is a good balance of easy winding and inches per turn. The next step is a slow action rod, something a little more forgiving when the fish runs. Finally cutting the butt of the rod down to 7-9 inches allows them to get the rod in the proper fighting position giving them more control of what is going on and what they are actually able to do. 6 year old Daniel is a great example of how well this works. He was able to land multiple muttons up to 12 pounds with minimal if any help.
