Frank LoPreste explains that the secret to effectively fishing live bait is to actively help the bait swim by manually pulling line off the reel when it hits the water, avoiding thumb pressure that exhausts the fish. He stresses the importance of keeping the line lightly in your fingertips to constantly feel the bait's "tail beat" and holding the rod high to prevent the bait from dragging heavy line through the water. If the bait stops moving, Frank recommends applying brief tension by winding the reel and then returning to free-spool to startle it back into action, concluding that mastering this tactile communication requires deliberate practice long before you ever step onto the boat.
