With deep gratitude, we are proud to reflect on the successful launch of the inaugural HBCU Hoops Invitational (HBCU HI), held December 4–7, 2025, at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida.
As a national basketball invitational dedicated exclusively to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), the event elevated HBCU excellence on a premier stage through competitive sport, cultural celebration & meaningful educational engagement. Four women’s & four men’s programs representing eight institutions competed for the 2025 Championship, showcasing talent, resilience, school pride & the enduring legacy of HBCU collegiate athletics.
Congratulations to the Hampton University Women’s Team & the Florida A&M University (FAMU) Men’s Team for capturing the inaugural titles & setting the tone for a remarkable first year.
Beyond competition, the Invitational was intentionally designed as a holistic student-athlete & community experience. Signature programming included a Sports Symposium Fireside Chat centered on leadership, career pathways & total human wellness, a College Fair connecting youth & families with HBCU institutions & a Welcome Reception & Award Ceremony honoring legendary leaders & change makers. We were honored to recognize C. Vivian Stringer & the historic 1982 Cheyney State Lady Wolves, honor the legacy of Coach Clarence “Bighouse” Gaines & present the Bob Billingslea Legacy Award to Alonzo Mourning for his continued community impact through the Overtown Youth Center. The presence of 99-year-old scholarship advocate & proud HBCU alumna Mrs. Janie R. Robinson was a powerful reminder of the legacy & purpose that guide this initiative.
We are sincerely grateful to the leadership, alumni, coaches, student-athletes, & supporters from Florida A&M University, Edward Waters University, Florida Memorial University, Bethune-Cookman University, Tuskegee University, Hampton University, Livingstone College & Barber-Scotia College, along with the support of Florida House Representative Leonard Spencer & dedicated HBCU advocates.
This inaugural success was made possible through the belief, partnership & generosity of our donors & sponsors, including AdventHealth, Florida Blue, Disney on the Yard, ESPN Films, Andscape, Delta Air Lines, , Spalding, & Hoop Culture.
We also extend heartfelt appreciation to the Wekiva High School Band, our Advisory Council, panel speakers, consultants, media teams, staff, volunteers & partners whose commitment behind the scenes brought this vision to life with excellence & purpose.
Thank you for believing in the vision & helping us establish a legacy platform that celebrates HBCU excellence, supports scholar-athletes & inspires the next generation.
