This may be one of the most important videos I have made about yoga safety. In Video №3 of Why NOT Do Yoga?, I talk about the “EGO' yoga teacher: the intense, powerful, popular teacher who may look impressive from the outside, but may not be teaching with safety, humility, ethics, or the individual student in mind.
I also admit something important in this video: I was once that kind of teacher too.
I know what it is to mistake intensity for transformation and confidence for wisdom. I have also been hurt by badass yoga teachers who pushed too hard, called me out, dismissed my limits, or made me feel like my body was the problem when the real problem was the lack of safety in the room.
This may anger some yoga teachers, and that is okay. This video is not about protecting the ego of the teacher. It is about protecting the body, nervous system, dignity, and discernment of the student.
Do not quit yoga. Quit unsafe yoga.

Feeling Safe as a Highly Sensitive Individual
How Do I Sense Safety Feeling Safe as a Highly Sensitive Individual By Troy Alan Cox 06/011/2026 Photo credit: Simoneau Photography Sanford ...

This one is called “What Is That Scent?”
Smell is such a strange and powerful sense. It can comfort us, overwhelm us, make us nauseous, pull us back into a memory, or tell us instantly that something in a space feels safe or unsafe.
In this piece, I write about my father losing his sense of smell and taste, my own sensitivity to scent, essential oils, caregiving, memory, vertigo, roses, bathrooms, dementia, and the way scent can live in the body long after the moment has passed.
For the Safe Spaces Project, scent matters because a space is not only what we see. It is also what we breathe in, what we taste in the air, and what our nervous system registers before we even know why.
Do you have a scent you love?
Or one you absolutely cannot tolerate?
