Greater Orlando Week 8 Recap

Friday, Oct. 9, 2026 (some Thursday games)

District races tightened and a pair of undefeated programs stayed perfect as Greater Orlando high school football moved deeper into the regular season. Evans punched its first Class 5A District 4 ticket in 14 years, Lake Wales locked up (or all but locked up) the Class 4A-7 title, and Seminole and Innovation remained the last two unbeaten teams in the area.

District Championship Clinchers & Contenders

Evans 48, South Lake 17 — Evans (4-3, 2-0) clinched the Class 5A District 4 title on homecoming. The Trojans led only 13-7 at halftime before exploding for 35 second-half points.

• Will Jackson, QB- 14 of 23, 283 yds, 3 TD’s

• Brian Dillard, WR — 8 catches, 204 yards, 2 TDs.

• Daveon Williams, RB — 11 carries, 85 yards, 2 TDs (including a 21-yard score that opened the second-half surge).

• Demtre Pryor, DB — 2 interceptions (16th career), including a return that set up a short-field score.

The win, combined with Wekiva’s loss, sealed the title for Evans.

Lake Wales 28, Jones 6 (Thursday) — Lake Wales (6-1, 3-0) claimed control of Class 4A District 7 in a rain-soaked, turnover-filled game. Jones put the ball on the ground eight times; Lake Wales recovered six and turned them into points.

• Kaneilius Purdy, WR — Multiple touchdowns, including a 38-yard screen and an 8-yard score. UCF commit.

• Kingston Loydd, QB — Scoring runs and touchdown passes that pulled Lake Wales away.

• Kamari Smith, RB — Early 2-yard TD and key rushing yards in the wet conditions.

Jones (now 5-1, 1-1) will need an at-large bid. Lake Wales has one district game remaining against winless Kathleen.

Seminole 21, Lake Mary 19 — The undefeated Seminoles (7-0, 2-0) rallied from a 12-0 hole with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to stay perfect and alone atop 6A-3.

• Tyree Howard, RB/WR — 7 carries, 115 yards, 2 TDs (including a 77-yard go-ahead run) + 6 catches for 113 yards.

• Daniel Proenza, QB — 13-of-17, 192 yards.

• Defense: Jamarion Coleman (13 tackles, 3 TFL, blocked FG), Mason Willis (12 tackles, 4 TFL, sack), and others controlled the second half.

West Orange 44, Dr. Phillips 27 — Warriors kept the Orange Crate rivalry trophy and improved to 6-1. Coach Geno Thompson, a West Orange alum, called it the biggest of the program’s three rivalry games. The win moved the Warriors into second place in the district. Thompson praised the team’s resiliency and finish.

TFA 31, Archbishop McCarthy 24 — Royals (6-1) overcame an early deficit. Bam Whitfield scored on an 80-yard kickoff return (game-winner) and a 75-yard run; Deuce Woods Jr. added long rushing scores.

Innovation 51, Colonial 0 (or 61-0 in some reports) — Last remaining undefeated independent program rolled. Jaden Bolten returned two punts for scores and picked off a pass.

Lake Nona at Harmony 7 p.m., Longhorn Field, St. Cloud

Lake Nona is 5-1, 1-0 in Class 6A-5, and No. 8 in the Sentinel. The Lions have scored 196 points and allowed 67. The only loss is 13-10 in overtime at Winter Park. Since then they have beaten Edgewater 24-3, Wekiva 53-16, and St. Cloud 43-8 in the district opener. The St. Cloud box was 267 rushing yards and 205 passing. Coach David Aubrey’s team is off a bye and does not need style points. It needs the district mark.

Harmony is 1-5 and 0-2 in the district. The Sentinel has Lake Nona in control of 6A-5, with Gateway and Tohopekaliga playing each other tonight for the right to stay in the chase. A loss here would hand that race back to Kissimmee. A win sets up Gateway at Nemours Stadium on Oct. 16.

The Lions’ prospects are Charles Woodson Jr., a 2027 safety, interior lineman Jack Mazurek, and defensive linemen Darren White and Eddie Crattic III. Noah Green is the listed 2027 back.

Tohopekaliga at Gateway is the Game of the Week. The Tigers are 4-2 and 1-0 in the district. Gateway is 5-1 and 0-1. The Sentinel has this as the game that keeps one side alive in a district Lake Nona otherwise controls. Gateway cannot drop another district game and stay in that conversation.

Auburndale at Osceola is a district game both sides need. Auburndale is 4-2 and 0-2. Osceola is 2-5 and 0-2. Windermere at St. Cloud is the even matchup, 4-2 against 4-2. Davenport at Poinciana matters in 6A-9. Poinciana is 4-2, tied with Haines City at 2-0 in the district, and just beat Winter Haven 21-20.

🔘PPR ORLANDO WEEK 8 GOTW🔘

SEMINOLE COUNTY

Lake Mary at Seminole Friday, Oct. 9, 7 p.m., Thomas E. Whigham Stadium, Sanford Class 6A-3

This is a district game, and the records do not match the name on it. Seminole is 6-0 and 1-0. Lake Mary is 1-5 and 0-1. The Rams are the defending Class 7A state champion. They have not played like it.
Karl Calhoun’s team has scored 189 points and allowed 83. It is 4-0 at Whigham Stadium, outscoring home opponents 138-55. The road wins are real too: 24-7 at Lake Howell and 27-21 at Mainland. The district opener was 43-18 over Apopka. The other results are 26-17 over Mountain Vista, 27-13 over Eau Gallie, and 42-7 over University. Seminole was off last week. The next district game after this one is Oct. 23 at Lake Brantley, the team tied with Seminole for first in 6A-3. A slip here does not end the race. It does take the margin out of it.

Scott Perry’s Rams have scored 84 and allowed 170. The only win is 24-23 over Oviedo in the opener. Since then it is 9-17 to Osceola, 0-33 at DeLand, 13-36 to West Orange, 21-28 to Lake Brantley in the district opener, and 17-33 at Mandarin. That is five losses in a row, and the road mark is 0-2. West Orange’s AJ Chung threw for 344 yards and five scores in the 36-13 win at Lake Mary. That is the offensive standard Seminole does not have to match. It only has to keep the Rams from finding the one game that looks like 2025.

ORANGE COUNTY

West Orange at Dr. Phillips is the game of the night. The Warriors are 5-1 and 0-1 in the district. The Panthers are 4-2 and 1-0. The Orlando Sentinel has framed a Dr. Phillips win as the piece that sets an Oct. 23 district title date at home. West Orange’s only loss is to Edgewater, so that reading only holds if the Panthers handle the best offense they have seen.

AJ Chung is that offense. The junior quarterback is 82 of 155 for 1,352 yards, 18 touchdowns and 3 interceptions through six games, 225.3 yards a night. He threw for 344 yards and five scores against Lake Mary, then 133 and one in the 31-6 loss at Edgewater. Dr. Phillips is built the other way. The Panthers blanked Olympia 30-0 and shut out Osceola 13-0. The last logged Olympia box was 189 rushing yards and 141 passing. This is a run front against a passer, not a track meet.

Archbishop McCarthy at The First Academy 7 p.m., Payne Stewart Athletic Complex, Orlando

The First Academy is 5-1, 1-0 in its district, and No. 7 in Florida on MaxPreps. The Orlando Sentinel has the Royals at No. 2. The only loss on the sheet is to IMG Academy, a 48-27 game in which Orlando still put 27 on the board. Last week the Royals opened district play by beating Cocoa 49-3.

Archbishop McCarthy walks into Payne Stewart Athletic Complex, 3-3 and 1-1 in Class 5A-15, with 169 points scored and 102 allowed. One of the losses was to national ranked powerhouse, St. Thomas Aquinas, 40-7. McCarthy is a Broward program on the road, not a local district rival, and the Royals have already shown they can score on a national schedule.

St. Cloud handed Gateway its first loss of the season in a district game.

Friday, Oct. 2 | Class 6A-5 district
St. Cloud (4-2, 1-1) handed Gateway (5-1, 1-1) its first loss. The Bulldogs won it on the ground and closed it with a sack on the last snap.

Team / individual

• St. Cloud rushed for a season-high 150 yards and four touchdowns without starter Michael Cuyler (shoulder).

• Eli Manning, Jr. RB — 82 yards and 2 TDs (local recap; Sentinel had 18 carries, 88 yards, 1 TD). Starting in place of Cuyler. Named Osceola Air Player of the Week.

• Jaden Taylor-Irons — 3-yard TD run, plus the two-point run after Manning’s first score.

• Owen Sullivan — 1-yard TD, the go-ahead score.

• Colton Sklarek, LB — game-ending sack of Span Jr. with one second left, after Gateway had driven from its own 3 to the St. Cloud 8.

• Nydrell Thigpen, Gateway RB — 2 TDs and crossed 1,000 rushing yards. Held to 57 yards (Positively Osceola) or 87 yards on 32 carries (Sentinel), more than 140 under his average. Still the Panthers’ only scoring threat.

• Aristotle Span Jr., Gateway QB — 15-yard TD run; sacked on the final play.

Gateway reached the 8 with 18 seconds left after overcoming 2nd-and-25 at its own 3. Thigpen was stopped for no gain, then Sklarek ended it.
