The four athletic skills of tennis, as demonstrated by 3-time Grand Slam Doubles Champion Zhang Shuai, are:

- Being grounded (i.e., step down)
- Snapping the hips (i.e., low spin)
- Transferring from one foot to the other (i.e., transfer move)
- Hitting off one leg (i.e., front foot hop)

Putting all four into one drill is a great idea!

Also, note my two favourite words in tennis, demonstrated in this drill: energy and focus.

By the way, Zhang is still going strong and remains on the tour at 37 years of age. What a role model and equally nice person.

Congratulations on everything you have achieved!!!

A great way to practice your footwork is to play a set against the wall.

Start with a serve. Then hit 8 shots at match pace above the line, catching the ball with the non-hitting hand after each shot to give yourself a point. Play sudden death deuce.

You lose the point if you:
1. Hit the ball under the line.
2. Drop the ball on the last catch.
3. Hit the ball over the wall or into the side fence.

Good luck!

Thanks to Jordan Lee for demonstrating.

Tai Chi Tennis Yoga
I like Tennis Tai Chi / Yoga as a group warm up at the very beginning of a lesson where the leader hits and the rest of the group shadow the leader and thus swing at the same time as the hitter out in front

It is called Tennis Tai Chi / Yoga as the emphasis is on :
1.) Strength
2.) Breathing
3.) Balance
4.) Timing
5.) Contact Point
6.) While Freezing the finish and slowing everything down

I particularly like it performed from the service line..... while the ball is thrown over the net by the coach …and …that ….everything is overemphasised..... so it can be better felt and understood !

The 4 boys demonstrating were fly in clinic clients of mine just this week.

Their names where Amrit, Simeon, Reid and Elijah

They all flew in from the
Huether Family Match Pointe Tennis Facility in
Sioux falls South Dakota

They were amazing students and even nicer boys …and so respectful and dedicated

Thanks for putting in the hard work boys

Great Foot- work-out

So…the Golden 12 Contact Moves have the 4 athletic skills involved

That’s is
Staying Grounded used 29% of the time
Hitting off 1 leg 21% of the time
Snapping the Hips used 26%
Transferring from 1 Foot to the other 24%

Pretty much all used the same Percentage
So to have a workout or warmup that targets all 4 is gold

Plus the advantages of a footwork ladder are :

A footwork or agility ladder improves speed, agility, and coordination by training quick foot movement and changes of direction. It also enhances cardiovascular fitness and calorie burn, boosts cognitive function by requiring focus and quick thinking, and strengthens the lower body. These ladders are also useful for warm-ups, injury prevention, and balance training.

Physical benefits
• Increases speed, agility, and quickness
• Boosts coordination and balance
• Improves cardiovascular fitness
• Strengthens the lower body.
• Enhances reaction time:

Cognitive and other benefits
• Boosts cognitive function:
• Serves as an effective warm-up:
• Aids in injury prevention:
• Provides a full-body workout:
• Offers a versatile training tool:

I truly believe that having tennis statistics available really helps justify your choice of what Contact Moves you should teach in tennis

The video above shows the frequency of the 12 Golden Moves of tennis from data collected from a frequency study of over 22, 000 shots used by ATP and WTA professional players …such as Djokovic. Nadal, Federer, Alcaraz, Serena Williams to name a few!!

What’s important to note here…. is that the study included not just groundstrokes ….but volleys, approach shots and volleys!

The reason that the Power Move can first was that it was used 3x more than the second most common return and was the 2nd most common volley …while the Closed BH was used 4x more than the 2nd most common Groundstroke

However….. just because a Contact Move is used most frequency doesn’t mean it is more important because some moves like the Front Foot Hop are more aggressive and thus used less…..because it is more common as a. approach shot than a groundstroke!!

Here is the list of frequency of the Golden 12 Contact Moves:

Again ….Note: The frequency study includes groundstrokes FHs, BHs & Runarounds) , volleys, returns and approach shots

1st : Power Move
2nd: Closed BH
3rd: Mogul Move
4th: 1 Foot Pivot
5th: Low Step Down
6th: Lateral Hop
7th: Loaded Transfer
8th: Low Spin
9th: Reverse Spin
10th: Back Foot Hop
11th: 2 Foot Pivot
12th: Front Foot Hop

Importantly …the above list is based on statical information ..it is not educated guess work!

Dot- step on -swing Drill

Above is great footwork, reaction, Contact Move reaction drill …amazing as a warm up !

👉 Coach holds 10 SOFT FLEXIBLE dots in his/ her hand ( avoid hard slippery dots)

👉 Players starts and recovers to central dot

👉 Coach throws 10 dots onto the ground randomly …calling out the intended Contact Move …Neural ,Closed and Open stance Moves are the best and easiest choices!

👉 Players steps onto the disc…completes the allocated Contact Move then recovers to a disc to await next call

👉 Finish with an approach shot and split at the service line at the finally thrown dot

Big call out to brothers Anderson 10yrs and Emerson Xu 13yrs for demonstrating the drill ..awesome energy and focus …two essential elements needed in drilling!!!
