Around 1920, the Harvard Psychology Department threw out introspection as a reliable tool for studying consciousness. They argued that it was capricious and a risk to the mental health of the subjects. All reports based on introspection were invalidated by the declaration, "People only see what they expect to see." And Harvardโ€™s fail-safe argument was, if you really studied consciousness by introspection, the only thing you would see would be consciousness introspecting on itself. (Existence as an observing spirit was still considered a derangement.)

๐Ÿ–‹๏ธCopthorn McDonald, a writer and independent scholar, notes that after rejecting introspection, โ€œPsychologists turned almost exclusively to studying behavior, and describing it in terms of stimulus and response. Consciousness was totally bypassed as a subject.โ€

1๏ธโƒฃThere were two principle arguments for rejecting introspection. The first argument was that when looking inward you only see what you expect to see, (anyone who has had a dream in which something unexpected happened, will see that the statement โ€œpeople only see what they expect to seeโ€ is not true.)

2๏ธโƒฃThe second argument was that it was capricious and a risk to the mental health of the subjects. (This was probably true for people who lacked self-control and were not trained in how the mind operated, but to generations of meditators, and spiritual seekers, it was just an amusing superstition.)

๐Ÿ’ขThe fact is, nullifying introspection as a reliable source of knowledge about consciousness was a big league, ivy league mistake. It would not be corrected for fifty years.

But they dropped the ball and went down a different path โ€“ a behaviorist path of rewarded and punished behaviors. Psychology ceased to be about consciousness...

๐Ÿ’กIn the 1960โ€™s, a human potential movement began to grow, and its preferred method of research was looking inward. Their message was a one-hundred-eighty degree flip from the idea that introspection was a risk to mental health. The new message was,๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ข๐™ค๐™ง๐™š ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช ๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™™๐™š๐™ง๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™ค๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ง๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง ๐™ค๐™ฌ๐™ฃ ๐™˜๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™˜๐™ž๐™ค๐™ช๐™จ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™จ๐™จ, ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐™—๐™ง๐™ž๐™œ๐™๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง, ๐™๐™–๐™ฅ๐™ฅ๐™ž๐™š๐™ง, ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ข๐™ค๐™ง๐™š ๐™จ๐™ช๐™˜๐™˜๐™š๐™จ๐™จ๐™›๐™ช๐™ก ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช ๐™ฌ๐™ž๐™ก๐™ก ๐™—๐™š๐™˜๐™ค๐™ข๐™š. Are you engaged in a struggle between deliberate will and habitual mental inertia?

Will is a broad term referring to the motivating force behind an activity.

๐Ÿ”Will is a two-way bridge between thinking and doing. It transforms mental activity into ๐™ซ๐™ž๐™จ๐™ž๐™—๐™ก๐™š ๐™ง๐™š๐™–๐™ก๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ฎ.

When successfully employed, the will makes humans victorious in their endeavors. When the will is not successfully employed, people fail and efforts revert to thinking.

๐Ÿ”‘๐™ˆ๐™–๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™š๐™ง๐™ฎ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฌ๐™ž๐™ก๐™ก is essential to control of mind and attention. Identification with will is a characteristic of enlightenment.

๐™’๐™ž๐™ก๐™ก: the power of making a reasoned choice or decision, or of controlling oneโ€™s own actions.

When attention is not directed by the will, it behaves in response to the environment or according to past patterns.

๐ŸŒ™ Most of you have probably experienced a phenomena called lucid dreaming.

๐Ÿ’ญA distinctive characteristic of lucid dreaming is that you become aware that you are dreaming. โ€œOh, I am dreaming.โ€ This is a moment of self-awareness within the dream.

โœจA lucid dream is like a moment of awakened spiritual awareness. You are no longer identified with the mental activity that is taking place in the mind, but have become a formless outside viewer.๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝIโ€™m using lucid dreaming here as an analogy of spiritual awakening into lucid living.

๐ŸŒŽWhat if you could operate a mind without getting drawn into it? Life is still going on, but now you can see the flaws in thinking that lead to suffering, and the paths that lead to an Enlightened Planetary Civilizationยฎ.

๏ฟฝType One, Type Two, and Type Three belief systems are various degrees of unawareness of the existence of Type Four belief systems. Type Four belief systems establish the rules and playing fields for the other types.

โณType Four belief systems are usually temporary and changeable as there is no hard reality that they pretend to reflect.

The Avatarยฎ materials contain instructions and tools that one can use to deliberately create, manage, and enjoyably experience the many variations of Type Four beliefs.
๏ฟฝThe adherents of Type Four systems look upon their beliefs, as well as those of others, as the blueprints for experiential reality. Type Four believers employ beliefs to knowingly create in the medium of experience. They believe for the purpose of experiencing.

They tend to be appreciative and respectful of different belief systems, but will seldom defend any.

They frequently change their beliefs to explore new possibilities and new facets of experience.

Type One contains mostly dogma, indoctrination, and controlling beliefs.
Type Two contains common sense beliefs.
Type Three contains scientific, fact-supported beliefs.
Type Four contains intentionally created beliefs...

If you trace the word โ€˜believeโ€™ back to its roots you will find that it means to be comfortable with or satisfied with.

The belief that a believer in a Type One belief system is comfortable with, or satisfied with, is not always the same belief that a believer in a Type Three belief system is comfortable with or satisfied with. We have an idiom in English for that: Different strokes for different folks.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธWhen I say, โ€œI believe you,โ€ what am I really saying?

Some truths are very uncomfortable and hard for me to believe.

Some lies are easy for me to believe, because they are satisfying and make me feel comfortable.

If you tell me my mistakes are not my fault, that is easy for me to believe. If you tell me my mistakes are my responsibility, that is uncomfortable, and I would rather not believe you.
