🔥 WELCOME TO KC SMOKE, LI ANNE KERN! 🔥

Please join us in welcoming Li Anne Kern to the KC Smoke family! 💨🏃‍♀️

Originally from the Netherlands (later moving to the States to marry the love of her life), Li Anne started her running career on the track, competing in the 400m during high school and college. But it wasn’t until a friend challenged her to run the 2018 Kansas City Marathon that she discovered her love for distance running!

Fast forward to 2026, and this mom of four is absolutely crushing it! 💪

🔥 2026 PERSONAL BESTS:
🏅 Mile: 5:28 (1st Place – KC Metro Mile Women’s Open)
🏅 5K: 18:54
🏅 10K: 39:28
🏅 Half Marathon: 1:28:31
🏅 Marathon: 3:06:01

That’s 5 personal bests in one year! 🔥

Li Anne has found a way to balance family life and competitive running, often with her kids riding their bikes alongside her during training runs.

After checking off every goal she set for 2026, she’s already looking ahead to her next big challenge: breaking 3 hours in the marathon, with hopes of making it happen at Boston in 2027! 👀

We love Li Anne’s enthusiasm for the sport, her determination to keep improving, and her desire to find out just how far she can push her limits while having fun along the way.

Welcome to the Smoke family, Li Anne! We’re excited to see what’s next! 🔥💨

🔥 SMOKE IN MINNESOTA! 🔥

Two athletes. Two incredible performances. One big weekend for KC Smoke! 💨

🏆 Reid Buchanan delivered another historic performance at the 2026 USATF 10K Road Championships, racing to a 4th-place finish and clocking the 6th-fastest eligible road 10K time in American history (according to World Athletics) with a 27:43! 🇺🇸 An incredible achievement that further cements Reid’s place among the nation’s elite distance runners!

🏃‍♀️ Clara Mayfield took on 26.2 miles at the 2026 Twin Cities Marathon, battling her way to an impressive 2:38:26 and a 10th-place finish against a competitive field! Another outstanding showing on the national stage!

From the speed of the 10K to the grind of the marathon, KC Smoke was on fire in MN! 🔥🔥

🔥 WELCOME TO KC SMOKE, KATIE MCGOVERN! 🔥

We’re excited to welcome former Emporia State standout and Emporia State Athletics Hall of Famer Katie McGovern to KC Smoke!

Katie put together an outstanding collegiate career from 2008–2012, with PRs that included:

🏃‍♀️ 800m — 2:10
🏃‍♀️ Mile — 4:48
🏃‍♀️ 3,000m — 9:47
🏃‍♀️ XC 5K — 17:30

She was a 3x All-American in the 800m, 10x MIAA Champion indoors and outdoors combined with 2 each in the indoor mile, indoor 3000m, and indoor distance medley, and one each in the indoor and outdoor 800m and the outdoor 1500m.

After racing only a handful of times post-collegiately and focusing on raising her family, Katie is ready to get back to competing consistently. Just one year after having her 4th child, she recently clocked an impressive 17:28 5K at JOYRUN, earning her spot with Smoke and showing there is plenty of speed still to come.

We’re excited to have Katie in the Smoke family and can’t wait to see where this next chapter of racing takes her!

💨 Welcome to KC Smoke, Katie! 💨

🔥 NEW ATHLETE ALERT 🔥

KC Smoke is excited to welcome Michael Scott to the team!

Michael brings some serious speed to the squad, with PRs ranging from a 4:23 mile to a 1:12 half marathon:

🏃 Mile: 4:23.5
🏃 5K: 15:38.16
🏃 Half Marathon: 1:12:50
🏃 Marathon: 2:52:18

And his latest result came with a little extra resistance, Michael ran 16:08 at the Lenexa Freedom Run 5K while pushing a stroller in his first-ever stroller race. 👶💨

Michael is currently focused on the mile and 5K while beginning to transition toward the half marathon. He has some big goals ahead: a new 5K PR, breaking 1:10 in the half, racing consistently across multiple distances, and chasing the KC Smoke A standard.

We’re excited to have Michael representing Smoke and becoming an even bigger part of the KC competitive running community.

Welcome to the team, Michael! 💨🔥

🚨 WELCOME TO KC SMOKE, MANDY ZIMMERMAN! 💨

We’re fired up to welcome Mandy Zimmerman to the Elite Female Group within the KC Smoke family!

A 2:46 marathoner, wife, mom of three, and woman of faith, Mandy brings a story built on perseverance, adaptability, and a genuine love for the sport.

Growing up as a military child, Mandy learned early how to adapt to change and find stability wherever life took her. Running became that grounding force, and a way to admire God’s beauty and glorify Him along the way.

After beginning to train seriously during her senior year of college, Mandy qualified for Boston with her first marathon in 2015. She’s been chasing growth ever since.

🔥 PRs
🏃‍♀️ Marathon — 2:46:11
🏃‍♀️ Houston Marathon 2025 — 2:47:40 | 16th American
⚡ Half Marathon — 1:17:54

And now, after welcoming her third child, Mandy is building back postpartum with some big goals ahead, including working toward a possible Olympic Trials Qualifier in the marathon.

We can’t wait to see what’s ahead.

Welcome to the Smoke, Mandy! 💨🔥

🔥 Welcome to the KC Smoke Elite team, Mary Kate McGranahan! 🔥

From NCAA Division III All-American to the ACC, and now a standout marathoner, Mary Kate has proven that every new challenge only brings out her best.

After leading Amherst College to national success, winning the 2022 NESCAC Cross Country Championship, and earning All-American honors, she took the leap to Virginia Tech, where she competed among the ACC’s top distance runners. Along the way she qualified for the NCAA East Regional, scored at the ACC Outdoor Championships in the steeplechase, and represented the Hokies at conference and regional championships.

Her transition to the roads has been just as impressive. In her marathon debut at Grandma’s Marathon, Mary Kate clocked an outstanding 2:49:00, and we believe an even bigger breakthrough is just around the corner. With CIM and future goals ahead, we’re excited to be part of the journey.

🏃‍♀️ PR Highlights
