It’s very easy to think that you get optimal shoulder turn in the backswing by just viewing how far back your shaft goes. Even though PGA pros don’t typically have long swings with their shaft going way past parallel, they do get TONS of shoulder rotation. However, the angle between their arm and wrist is just less. Proper shoulder turn is important for generating optimal speed in the swing. If you are lacking shoulder turn even if your shaft is reaching parallel or just past it, your thoracic spine mobility might be holding you back from further drives.

Too often amateur golfers are scared to LOOK off balance which leaves the swing stuck in a box. And more importantly, the swing speeds too. It is absolutely okay to let that lead leg release after impact as a reaction to proper ground reaction force production.

Golfer’s being athletes is awesome. More athletic swings, better use of the ground, these are great things for golfers that can really help their game. But remember, golf and baseball are very different sports. Just because both are rotational swinging sports does NOT mean they should be trained the same way. While there are certain carryovers, it is always important to understand that different sports have different requirements thus should be trained differently if looking for optimal performance.

Even the same looking exercise can have a lot of different purposes. Those purposes can either make you sink or swim. Too often people see professionals or somebody doing an exercise and then copy it while pushing themselves to the absolute max because they think it must be done until failure or at a high rate of perceived exertion. This just isn’t the case. Before you go copying the wide variety of internet workouts, truly understand their why behind the movement. And if it makes sense for you to implement, do it. Safely and with purpose.
