Today is . It marks how long women must work into 2020 to catch up to what men earned in 2019 alone. And today, equal pay day feels even more urgent than ever because of the coronavirus.
On average, women are paid 18% less than men in the U.S. That number is even worse for Black women and Latinas, who are paid 38% and 45% less than white men on average.
In just a year, the average woman loses $10,122 as a result of the gender pay gap. And in 40 years, that number rises to $407,760. This loss of income adds up—on average, women have 30% less money in savings than men—so they are less equipped to weather the crisis.
Now, more than ever, the pay gap matters. 🗣
