Providing formal, supervised training for students to qualify for umpire positions in professional, Al Somers was the founder of the Daytona Beach based school.

The Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School, formerly the Al Somers Umpire School, was re-named in 1977. He also was the originator of the entire training process. Al Somers has set every record for training umpires. More than seventy of his students have reached the Major Leagues during Al's fifty years of training. Al died 15 years ago. His memory and methods live on through the staff and training techniques they use. This great umpire dedicated his life to this profession.

Today marks 14 years since we lost our Chief, Harry Wendelstedt. Harry Wendelstedt dedicated his life to the game of baseball, earning respect across generations for his professionalism, fairness, and deep knowledge of the sport.

Through decades on the field and his renowned umpire training, he helped shape not only the rules of the game but the character of those who officiate it.

The Wendelstedt Umpire School has produced more Major League umpires than all other umpire schools combined.

His legacy lives on in every umpire he mentored and in the integrity he brought to the game of baseball. Rest in Peace, Chief.
