THE FIRST 5 SECONDS

Most self-defense training starts too late.

Someone grabs you.
Someone throws a punch.
A weapon comes out.

Now defend yourself.

But real violence doesn’t begin with the attack. There are often critical moments leading up to it—and what you recognize and decide during those moments can completely change what happens next.

On September 21 from 5:15–7:00 PM, we’re hosting The First 5 Seconds: Self-Defense Decision Making That Matters at Impact Martial Arts.

This isn’t going to be two hours of memorizing techniques against predetermined attacks.

We’re going to explore what happens before, during, and immediately after the moment violence begins, including:

• Pre-incident indicators — recognizing behavior that may precede violence
• Deception & behavioral cues — when someone’s words and actions don’t match
• Situational awareness — learning what actually deserves your attention
• Simple vs. aggravated assault — understanding how the problem changes when weapons or serious bodily harm enter the equation
• The Moment of Commitment vs. Moment of Recognition — how quickly an attacker can commit to violence versus when you recognize what’s happening
• Positioning, distance & environmental control — creating better options before you’re forced to fight
• Decision-making under stress — because knowing a technique and recognizing when to act are two very different things
• Prey vs. Predator Mindset — what happens psychologically when someone believes they’ve selected a victim, and how changing your mindset can change your response

We’ll combine discussion with practical exercises designed to make you observe, recognize, decide, and act rather than simply wait for someone to attack you.

Because the goal isn’t to become better at reacting to violence.

The goal is to recognize the problem sooner, make better decisions, and take control of those first critical seconds.

This workshop also serves as the official launch of our 16-week IDS APEX Defense Against Aggravated Assaults course, where we’ll take these concepts much deeper.

Violence may happen fast. Your preparation shouldn’t start after the first punch is thrown.

Team Vaghi Competitors,

This is your final warning.

Today at 8:30 PM is the deadline to order your personalized embroidered Team Vaghi competitor hoodie.

Do it today—or live with the regret.

And we have documented evidence of what that regret looks like.

Manon Allard did not get one in 2022.

For four long years, Manon walked among us, forced to watch everyone else proudly sporting their Team Vaghi hoodies while knowing he had made a terrible, irreversible decision.

Was he the first person to sign up when the hoodies finally came back around?

No.

Apparently four years of suffering still wasn’t enough to create urgency.

But his name is on the list this time.

Then there’s Tyler Buechel.

Tyler wasn’t even part of our gym when we did the last order and somehow still managed to get one.

Think about that.

Tyler looked at a hoodie for a gym he wasn’t even training with yet and thought, “Yeah, I’m not passing that up.”

Manon actually trained here and said, “Nah, I’m good.”

Learn from both of them.

And did I mention that we aren’t even making money on these hoodies?

We’re literally just trying to break even so we can offer our competitors a really cool, personalized Team Vaghi hoodie to wear when they travel, compete, and represent the team.

This isn’t a fundraiser. It definitely isn’t a money-maker.

We just want our competitors looking like a team.

Once 8:30 PM tonight hits, the order closes.

No extensions. No “I forgot.” No “Can you squeeze one more in?”

And based on our current highly efficient four-to-six-year production cycle, we aren’t doing this again until at least 2032.

Manon already served his four-year sentence.

Don’t become the next Manon.

Get your hoodie ordered by 8:30 PM tonight.

IDS APEX IS RETURNING TO IMPACT.

And I’m not looking for 12 students.

I’m looking for 12 training partners.

There’s a problem with a lot of what has become accepted in the self-defense and fi****ms training industries:

Training can make you feel prepared without actually preparing you for the problem.

Predictable attacks. Cooperative partners. Preplanned responses. Fi****ms “decision-making” drills where you already know you’re going to shoot—you’re just waiting for someone to yell which circle, square, or color to shoot.

You might look good in training.

But looking good in practice isn’t the same as learning.

The science of motor learning increasingly points us toward something different: representative problems, variability, perception-action coupling, exploration, contextualized decision-making and appropriately scaled resistance.

In other words:

If you’re training for a fight, eventually the training needs to feel like a fight.

I’ve been guilty of following accepted training methodologies myself. But as I’ve learned more, my training philosophy has changed.

I spent years as an Oshkosh police officer and Defense and Arrest Tactics instructor. I’ve also experienced violence outside the training hall. I’ve been attacked and have had to defend myself and fellow officers.

I know the difference between demonstrating a technique and dealing with someone who actually wants to hurt you.

And I’ll be doing this training with you.

Instructor. Training partner. Role player. Student.

We’ll succeed together.

We’ll fail together.

And we’ll get better together.

IDS APEX — PHASE 1: AGGRAVATED ASSAULTS

16 weeks exploring the problems facing the armed citizen when confronted with physical assaults, knives, blunt weapons and fi****ms.

Classroom training.

Physical training.

Contextualized decision-making.

Real resistance.

Scenario training.

And live fire.

Then we’ll build upon those skills with Phase 2: Family Security Operations & Close Protection, where the problem changes from protecting yourself to protecting someone else.

Only 12 committed participants.

Impact Self-Defense Program members: Included with membership for the first 12 who register.

Outside the program: $299 for the complete 16-week Phase 1 course, space permitting.

More details coming soon.

Don’t train to look good.
Train to get better.

IDS APEX is returning.

🥋 STRIPE ALERT: NICK DROVER EDITION 🥋

Congratulations to Nick Drover on earning his first stripe on his blue belt!

Following our recent public service announcements regarding proper stripe maintenance, Nick entered tonight with a significant advantage:

It’s remarkably easy to keep all your stripes when you don’t have any.

Problem solved. Nick now officially has one stripe to lose. Please govern yourself accordingly.

As with every Jiu Jitsu practitioner, Nick has his strengths and weaknesses.

Strength: Triangles. 🔺
Weakness: Also triangles. 🔺

Nick doesn’t just look for triangles. He believes in triangles.

Armbar available? Triangle.
Back take? Triangle.
Easy sweep? Triangle.
Opponent standing six feet away? There’s probably a triangle here somewhere.

Sometimes the triangle exists. Sometimes it absolutely does not. This has never stopped Nick from attempting to manifest one through sheer commitment.

Congrats, Nick, on Blue Belt Stripe #1.

Protect it. Cherish it. And please consult Tim for absolutely no advice whatsoever on stripe retention. 😂🥋
