Nothing frustrates me more than realizing I’ve been caught up again in the “hate myself club.”
Because that’s exactly what the devil wants.
Now, before you come at me with a “but…” — listen.
God tells us to take care of our bodies, our holy temples. He did not tell us to worship our bodies.
In fact, He tells us to deny ourselves.
Friends, we are so fickle. So easily distracted. So weak.
I don’t believe there is anything wrong with taking care of yourself. I do believe there is something dangerous about allowing it to become your identity.
When food becomes the enemy—or something we crave more than Jesus.
When we look in the mirror and see the cellulite, the wrinkles, the stretch marks… instead of seeing someone created by God.
When we convince ourselves we need anything more than the breath of God and the bread of Jesus.
When we’ve consumed so much information that our heads are spinning—calories, macros, supplements, workouts, hormones, body fat, “what I should and shouldn’t eat”—instead of simply finding peace in the Word of the Lord.
Have you read the Old Testament?
It has been the focus of my very unfocused mind this year, and one thing I keep noticing over and over again is how God’s people beg and plead with Him to forgive them.
They fall deeply and passionately in love with Him.
And then, somehow, they wake up the next day thinking, “We’re good.”
But they ain’t. 😂
Small things turn their heads.
Small things turn their hearts.
They forget.
And we are no different.
Fitness, building muscle, working out, eating well, taking care of your body—none of those things are bad.
But they should never become your identity.
They are part of who you are.
They are not whom you belong to.
And they certainly aren’t where you’re going to end up.
This life is so very fragile. So very short.
So if you want to get out of the “hate myself club,” start doing something for your soul just as much as—or even more than—you do for your body.
Lift weights.
Eat the protein.
Take care of your body.
But open your Bible, too.
Pray.
Worship.
Get quiet.
Remember who you belong to.
Because the goal was never to create a body you could worship.
The goal is to become a person who worships God with the body He gave you.
