What an incredible ride it’s been! I can’t believe I’ve been fishing with the legendary Captain Perkins for over five years now. Last season was absolutely unforgettable and particularly special because I had the honor of joining him on the water nearly every single day, trolling the deep, vibrant waters of Lake Ontario in Oswego, NY.

I’ve learned so much about what it takes to be a first mate under Perky’s guidance—from mastering the art of tackle setup to perfecting my baiting technique for those monster catches. Trolling out there is pure magic: setting up the rods, watching the lines dance in the waves, and feeling that heart-pounding tug when a big one bites! Oh the sweet sound of a screaming reel. We’d run multiple lines with downriggers and divers, cruising at just the right speed to lure in those trophy salmon and trout. The anticipation, the teamwork, the thrill—it’s an adrenaline rush like no other!

Captain Perkins’ dedication as an expert sport fishing charter captain is truly inspiring. The long hours, the early mornings, and the relentless grind are all part of the game, but the reward? Seeing the pure joy on our guests’ faces when they reel in a massive fish, like this king salmon I caught last year! It won’t be long now! Open water from Westport to Arnold’s as well as under the Crown Point Bridge has begun to emerge, teasing us with the promise of better fishing days ahead. However, we still see Basin Harbor, Button Bay, and Potash covered with ice, serving as a reminder that winter’s grip is not entirely gone.
