Moved and Realigned in Nevada. Now it’s time to Conquer!

My post-grad vacation was absolutely a dream, and exploring the wonders of nature - through hiking in Valley of Fire and kayaking down Lake Mead in Arizona - made me feel more myself than I have in a long time. Now that grad school is through, I am beyond excited to “MRC” my way back to what I love about fitness. Oh, how I have missed my Fit Ascent Life ♥️

I heard a quote once that’s said💬“Resistance and ambivalence is natural and normal in the face of change.”

Woah…rings pretty true, doesn’t it?

If you are someone who is struggling with making some changes to your routine in order to establish a healthier lifestyle, use this as your reminder that it’s normal to question, have doubts, be fearful, etc.

You can be excited for a potential change, and still fearful that you won’t succeed.

You can feel motivated to initiate change, and then discouraged when you’re less than perfect.

It’s super common to feel stuck!

Try considering all of your options with an unbiased eye. What are the pros and cons of the change you wish to make? What’s are the pros and cons of staying on your current routine? All of these variables are valid - acknowledging that can help ease your mind and make a decision.

Consider your values and what you want out of life as well. Are you currently acting in a way that aligns with these values? Do you know your why behind you wanting to make a change?

🌷Spring is a time of rebirth, but I also love using it as a time to realign. Sometimes a little metaphorical insight is good for the soul.😊

If you’re not moving, you’re losing.

Movement, fitness, exercise, training…whatever you want to call it, is such a gift.

If you want to improve your life, move.
Run
Jump
Climb
Lift
ALL OF THE ABOVE. Just get going.

There’s so much more to this “fitness” thing than JUST going to the gym and picking up some dumbbells.
❤️It’s getting together with a friend and trying something new.
❤️It’s challenging your mind as well as your body.
❤️It’s becoming more self aware and redefining limitations.
❤️It’s establishing NEW skills as well as confidence.
❤️It’s using OLD skills in new ways.

…And it’s sooo much more than that.

What I’m learning to love about climbing is recognizing gaps in my cognitive ability. While I generally have the strength and mobility skills to handle the task physically, I have recognized that my problem solving skills aren’t natural like those really good climbers who can just magically work out what foot/hand trickery is going to get them the hold. In many ways, this general theory carries over to other areas of my life as well. Sometimes you have the skills, you just don’t have all the keys to unlock the full potential. What makes this all so rewarding though, is when just one key opens up so many doors…and THAT is what this “fitness” thing is all about.

It’s 🙌🏼

Feat. ✨Slumber Party Knees✨

I’ve been using this cue for years and the funny thing is everyone just gets it 😂. Plus, it makes us all giggle a little so there’s that. I know it sounds silly, but hear me out...

If your kneecaps hurt while doing knee plank position exercises, there’s a pretty good chance that you’re actually in more of a quadruped position than you should be! Obviously, there is a difference between a quadruped position and this modified plank position, and there is a time and place for both (quad pass-throughs are a valid exercise!), but my point here is that so many people think they are actually in this modified plank position when they aren’t! And a lot of the time, even when someone has their weight forward, there’s still a lot of uncomfortable pressure on the kneecaps.

By beginning a modified push up in this “slumber party” position, your weight is actually on your quads and not the kneecap itself. (Your feet can also be down, and you may prefer that for exercises that may require a wider, more stable base - like for pass-throughs.)

❗️This positioning of the knees does require more mindfulness of core engagement, as your hips will likely be slightly lower than they are with your weight directly on your kneecaps. I’m always a champion for better core positioning, which is why I love SPK, however...

If you are really struggling to keep core engagement in this position (belly flopping/letting hips hit the ground before bending the arms), you can always substitute for a incline push-up to help you get stronger in a position that offers more variability.👌🏼

Move to Live, Love to Move❤️

Rise and Grind! It’s Monday! How are you moving this week?

Movement is a blessing🙏🏼, and falling in love with it is an absolute game changer in so many ways.

Think about what’s got you excited about your own movement journey these days.

Could it be
💪🏼achieving your very first pull-up?
💪🏼learning to do a handstand?
💪🏼feeling agile and free?
💪🏼being the strongest you’ve ever been?

However you choose to move, embrace it. Grow with it. Love that you’re always capable of so much more than you think.

Now...let’s get to work!!

✨Trap Bar Tuesday!✨

When it comes to deadlifts, one of the pieces of equipment I get asked about the most is the trap bar.

I personally love the trap bar, and it’s also a great way for beginners to work on the deadlift movement pattern without all the extra technicality that comes with barbell training.

Let’s take a quick look at why that is:

🙌🏼IT ALL COMES DOWN TO POSITION.🙌🏼

🔸Without a barbell determining knee placement, your knees are free to move more forward, shifting load some from the back to the legs. Moral of the story: your back might be a little happier.
🔸Because you can more freely position your body in the center of the trap bar, it is often easier to find a good center of gravity as well as achieve a straight lockout position without hyperextending like you might with a barbell. Assuming you have correct form and muscles are engaged properly, all you have to do is stand straight up.
🔸Hand position is also extremely helpful for achieving a comfortable deadlift. A neutral grip alleviates any imbalances that might come with a traditional barbell mixed grip, and you can really just focus on placing your hands right in the center of gravity.
🔸Everyone’s deadlifts look different based on anatomy to begin with, but the trap bar really allows for personal preference. You can work a more traditional or a more upright deadlift position in this setup. Higher/lower handles also offer some variance in range of motion. There’s a greater freedom in movement, which makes the trap bar pretty useful is playing with positioning and practicing movement patterns.

Don’t have access to a trap bar?🤔💡
You can still create a similar set up by placing kettlebells or dumbbells on plates or steps on either side of your body.👌🏼 From there, you can practice your deadlifts at any height you need to until you nail the pattern.
