Dent Island Lodge by Dent Rapids
There are many stories associated with this area and this particular destination.
One of the most important of these stories features a gentleman named "Gordy". And the moral of the story is:
Don't Wait Too Late To Have Your Fun In Life.
"Gordy" had a beautiful and nearly new custom yacht. BIG. BIG custom yacht, and very beautiful.
We met "Gordy" at Dent Island Lodge. We had chatted with other cruisers somewhere along the line and they asked "have you ben to Dent Island?" No, never heard of it. "Oh, you must go straight away, it was the private family compound of the Nordstroms (of the department stores) and is now open as a fish camp. So we did go. You have to run one of the rapids to get into Big Bay, so timing is important. We happened to get the primo space at the dock with our cockpit looking directly at Dent Rapids.
Met "Gordy" & crew at the hot tub that overlooks the rapids. We expressed admiration for his boat and particularly the stainless steel sculpture that served as his bow platform. He said that he had demanded such a big and long one because he wanted his yacht to be "more than 100 feet".
But the gentlemen had a disability. He had made a pile of money building stuff but had kept on working until he had a stroke. So he quit and built his yacht. He got around fine but could no longer drive. So he had to have a captain and crew to run the boat. Gordy wanted to run it and the captain wanted to run it. So the two of them argued, loudly. Shouted at each other over how to tie the yacht, how to launch the dinghy, when to go up for cocktails. We enjoyed the show they all put on but were very glad that we didn't wait to go cruising.
When we were at Dent, fresh crab cocktails were served when the bar opened each evening. Complementary, and as much as you liked. Very quality place.
