We are reopening our school 😀

During this workshop, I will be focusing on the concept, of "commonality in training." We spend time learning how to use impact weapons, edge weapons, etc. However, I believe there should be a natural and fluid progression between tactics. The commonality in training concept refers to building upon one concept that can be applicable in a variety of situations. For example: If you learn a basic stick deflection, you should be able to apply a lock, disarm, takedown, and control off of that one response. This should apply whether you are armed or empty-handed. Hope to see you there.

As I sit on a plane on my way to New York for a seminar at Shihan Jackeline Harnettan School, I reflect on this special day: International Women’s Day.

I would like to express my appreciation to George Chung and Black Belt Magazine. I am honored to be recognized and included within the ranks of women who have contributed to and influenced martial arts. I feel proud to have contributed on some level, encouraging other women to excel within this vast world of martial arts. Regardless of what path you choose, be it art, sport, or combative arts, I think it serves young women to look to those who have paved the path they walk upon, to learn from their experiences and challenges so as not to succumb to the pitfalls previously encountered.

This year marks 50 years since I took my first martial arts class. I am encouraged when I see how far women have come, especially within the sporting arena. Getting paid $100.00 per round is a thing of the past. Nevertheless, challenges are real. Women are still greatly outnumbered in dojo’s and continue to not be recognized or ranked on the same level or speed as their male counterparts.

My thoughts on this special day: Advocate for yourself, never forget that you have a right to learn, to progress, to excel, and remember that the challenges and obstacles you encounter, serve to test your ability to overcome and persevere.

We are with a new legend every day. Today, next to me is the first female boxing, kickboxing world champion and also stick fighting world champion. She’s very good teacher and legend.
