We Have Some Exciting News!
Heather and I have been keeping a secret for the past several months, and today we are finally able to share it.
Almost a year ago, we began conversations with two of our favorite people, Hutch Smith and Martha Emmons. If you know them, you already understand what an incredible impact they have had on our community. If you do not, let us tell you: they are truly among Paducah’s finest.
Thirty-nine years ago this Monday, Hutch and Martha embarked on a journey that would leave a lasting mark on our region when they opened BikeWorld. Over the next four decades, they poured their hearts into building not only a successful business but also a stronger, healthier community. Through their passion for cycling and active living, they have inspired generations of riders while supporting schools, literacy initiatives, community events, and countless charitable causes.
Walking into Bikeworld is like stepping into a living history of cycling in our community. The walls tell the stories of riders who grew up with the shop—many trading training wheels for carbon wheels as their love for cycling evolved. More importantly, Hutch and Martha created a place where everyone feels welcome. They have always treated every person who walks through the door like family, offering encouragement, friendship, and expertise with genuine warmth.
Today, exactly 39 years after Bikeworld first opened its doors, Heather and I are honored to assume stewardship of this remarkable business and its legacy.
We are humbled beyond words that Hutch and Martha have entrusted us with continuing what they have built. Cycling, and Bikeworld in particular, have played a significant role in my own life. Fifteen years ago, when I moved to Paducah to help establish the stroke center, Hutch and Martha were there to support our efforts. Together, we helped create Spokes for Strokes, a ride that has become a cherished community tradition, raising awareness and support for stroke care throughout our region.
Since then, cycling has become a cornerstone of my life. It has helped me relieve stress, build strength, form lasting friendships, and even overcome cancer.
As a physician, I often meet people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. What excites me most about this opportunity is the chance to also be part of people’s healthiest and happiest moments—helping them discover or continue a lifestyle centered on wellness, activity, and community. I am passionate about preventing disease, not just treating it, and BikeWorld, Bikes & Fitness represents an incredible opportunity to contribute to that mission.
As we look to the future, our goal is simple: continue building upon the foundation that Hutch and Martha have established.
We are committed to preserving the values, relationships, community involvement, and events that have made BikeWorld such a special place for nearly four decades. We know we have enormous shoes to fill, but we are grateful that Hutch and Martha have promised to remain close by as mentors and friends during this transition.
At the same time, we hope they enjoy the retirement they have so richly earned—one filled with family, friends, travel, and many miles on the roads and trails of the community they helped shape.
To everyone who has supported us throughout this journey, thank you. Your encouragement, friendship, and confidence mean more than we can express.
Heather and I are incredibly excited for this next chapter, and we look forward to riding alongside the people of Paducah for many years to come.
With gratitude,
Joseph and Heather Ashburn See less

At 1:30 Monday afternoon Hutch and I leapt into the universe of a marvelous
new beginning - retirement!
After 39 years of working to make our region a place where bicycling is
normal and safe, starting today Hutch and I will rely on Joseph (Rockdoc) and
Heather Ashburn, BikeWorld's new owners, to lead the mission. They share our
vision for BikeWorld and are not only dedicated to upholding BikeWorld’s
business values, but will move the company forward. Greg, Austin, Brooks,
Noah and John are vital to BikeWorld, and will continue in their essential roles
as the business moves into its 40th year.
..
As for Hutch and me, we love Paducah. Aside from traveling more, we plan to
stay right here - active, engaged, and riding, hopefully with you.
.
The heart holds more than words can express so I'm summing up tons of
emotions when I simply say the decades you have spent with us, as customers,
supporters and friends, have shaped our lives for good. You have loved us and
helped us raise our daughters, Carson and Chandler. You have been with us in
happy, sad, and scary times. Your loyalty to our family and this small-town
business has allowed us to support countless good causes and build a strong
bicycling community.
With your support, we have employed over 60 BikeWorld staff, hosted 38
Dogwood Trail Rides, 35 Misaligned Minds, 12 Moonlight Rides, 13 years of
Bike Camp, innumerable other tours, group rides and more events than we can
name. We feel deep gratitude to every person who has worked for us and to
everyone who has been a part of making BikeWorld a success.
.
Just because Hutch and I are stepping back from the store, don’t think
BikeWorld is slowing down. Heather and Joseph plan to keep all the
BikeWorld rides and activities. Nothing’s going away.
.
In fact, “Leadership by Bike Camp” is in full swing this week, the Superman
Bike Ride in Metropolis is on for Jume 13 and a season full of rides is included
in this newsletter.
You'll see us often at the store for the next month as we work with the
Ashburns, Greg, Austin, Brooks, Noah, and John to ensure a transition that
provides you with the care, service and fun you've always had.
,
The more things move and change the more there is to life. Thank you for
everything! Now, we’ll see you outside!
The longest running annual ride around. Let’s tell them we’ll be there. Get registered everyone!
