Yuri Verkoshansky aka the GodFather of Plyometrics and founder of The Shock Method.
The Shock Method uses the kinetic energy of a drop to force the neuromuscular system to absorb force and immediately redirect it.
You step off a box.
You hit the ground.
The stretch is not voluntary — it is imposed.
Tendons and muscle spindles load like a spring.
If the amortization phase is short enough, that stored energy doesn’t leak as heat.
It transfers into the next concentric action.
The clock is the standard: 0.15–0.20 seconds on the ground.
Verkoshansky’s own cutoff was simple — do not spend more than 0.2s after landing.
Faster than that and the elastic return stays intact.
Slower than that and you’re no longer shocking the system.
You’re just landing, then jumping.
That’s the whole game: absorb → transfer.
Not sink.
Not pause.
Not “stick it pretty.”
Rebound.
Featured example:
Drop from a 20" box.
First contact is the real shock — 0.15 to 0.20s.
Immediately clear the first 36" hurdle.
Then the second 36" hurdle.
Then the third 36" hurdle.
Then the fourth 36".
Same rhythm.
Same short ground contacts.
Each landing is another shock.
Each takeoff is the transfer.
If contact time stretches past 0.20s as the series goes on, the set is over.
Quality died.
You’re not training “jumping.”
You’re training the system to tolerate a violent eccentric, keep contact time under two-tenths of a second, and dump that force back into the ground so the next jump is bigger and faster than a regular countermovement would allow.
Shock in. Force out. Repeat.
If you can see the dip, you already missed the window.
