You run into lots of different attitudes in the martial arts (and out of it), most are extremely positive, but some extremely hateful. While all of us would prefer the positive, unfortunately there are those that just prefer to hate.
Hate is an emotion that gives us a feeling of intense hostility and aversion, usually deriving from fear, anger, or a sense of injury. It is extreme dislike or disgust. Extreme hatred can inspire violence, whether physically or online.
It is normal to have hateful feelings occasionally. From time to time I’m sure everyone has said; “I hate this.....…”. But most of the time this is a fleeting emotion in the moment, perhaps born out of frustration.
The opposite of hate is mental and emotional detachment. Hatred creates an attachment to the thing or person. It is an intense repulsion which falsely inflates the ego. It can make you feel very superior and self-righteous against the thing or person who is hated, often then blaming others for your hate, which only results in more pain.
In the martial arts (and in society in general), hatred is something we can do without. It seems to manifest itself in differences between styles, schools, and individuals who believe they are invincible, the best, the strongest, or they know better.
Hatred has no place in the martial arts. Haters are not happy people; they have to build themselves up by tearing others down. People who are always negatively commenting about others should be avoided because they’ll do the same to you behind YOUR back. They can’t be trusted and they will use you as a scapegoat.
“A child sits playing with building blocks. He builds them up and knocks them down. Builds them up. And knocks them down. Fascinated, he reflects on his capacity to destroy the very thing he’s created. Then begins again.”
Hatred is a response to fear - fear of the unknown, fear of humiliation, fear of powerlessness - but sometimes it’s calculated, willful, gleeful even.
Some of these people are creative and enthusiastic. But faced with frustration, faced with people they can’t control, faced with all the things that go wrong in their lives, there’s a part of them that wants to take revenge, to destroy everything and everyone…. To hate!
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately… and see if I could not learn what it had to teach.” Henry David Thoreau
Thoreau desired to learn what life had to teach him. He moved to the woods to experience a purposeful life. Prioritizing inner peace, and building that priority time into his days, so that any action he took came from a place of calmness.
Take time to focus on the experience of being alive, rather than being compulsive…. rather than ‘knocking down the blocks’…. Slow down, have the intelligence to let hatred go, and live life. 👊🥋

We remember you.

Bruce Lee revolutionized the Martial Arts, and how people look at the World. His contributions will always be remembered. R.I.P.

“Like everyone else, you want to learn the way to win, but never to accept the way to lose, to accept defeat, to learn to die is to be liberated from it. So when tomorrow comes, you must free your ambitious mind, and learn The Art of Dying.” -- Bruce Lee

“The Art of Dying”, is not a literal idea. It is not a matter of dying physically, but of a metaphor whose central idea is to let our ego die. The ego is the whole set of experiences, accumulations, analyzes, and memories that make up our view of ourselves. This ego carries all our prejudices, distortions and is formed by a limited and partial thought of reality, which prevents us from seeing it as it really is.

For the sages death is not primarily the disintegration of the body. Death means the end of the ego, a process that the Tao person tries to accomplish even in life. When this artificial formation of the “I” disappears from our existence, we can live beyond our “I”, that is, the true life, because it results from a dimension that no longer depends on time.

The ego is harmful in our daily lives, as it pressures us to want to be something and make connections with expectations for the future. The death of the ego implies both being open to criticism and incorporating constant process of learning in order to develop our abilities and to let go of any nostalgic ideas about the past and ambitious about the future. It is the ego that stiffens against outside influences, and it is this rigidity of the ego that makes it impossible for us to accept everything that confronts us.

Consequently, we must rid ourselves of our ambitious minds in order to enjoy our daily struggles in our daily lives without worrying about thinking in terms of victory or defeat, after all, “the fight against and favor is the worst disturbance of the mind,” Lee said. In that sense, letting the ego die means letting go of the protagonism of our own actions and focusing on the act of realizing, not realizations, after all, there is no actor, but action. There is no experimenter, but the experiment, he said.

Die, in this point, is more connected with the idea of the constant search for the student’s improvement from the forgetfulness of previous experiences and the development of the ability to empty the mind so that there is a new consciousness. Lao Zi said that “to be battered is to be renewed” and the Art of Dying is a form of rupture. 🤙

"Under the sky, under the heavens, there is but one family." Bruce Lee

This is a truly heartbreaking photo...

A man who has spent years building a mixed martial arts facility, toiling hard... day in, day out just to stay above water in order to pass on his knowledge, forced to close his doors.

I fear there will be so much more of this happening in the months ahead.

When are people going to realise how ridiculous this current policy is, and the massive effect it'll have for so many years ahead?

“We should break such circles not by seeking knowledge but by discovering the cause of our ignorance.” Seeking knowledge is a good thing, but if we are only seeking knowledge to accumulate methods and goals, then we are not enhancing our harmony or wisdom. Examine your learnings. You have acquired some learning, but what is it that you do not know? Where are your rigid about something? Where are you rejecting an idea or refusing to look at? Are you placing blame on someone or something else? Ignorance is a lack of knowledge or awareness. What are you ignoring?

You may become an expert in one field of endeavor but that does not mean that your knowledge is superior. Often when we become an expert in one way, we only subscribe to that way because we become comfortable in our expertise. These “set patterns” can be our obstacles. We should learn, take our learnings and then move beyond them.

What is to be derived from Bruce Lee’s writings apply as much to life as martial arts. Jeet Kune Do teaches that all fixed, set patterns are incapable of adaptability and growth. To use no way as way, to have no limitation as limitation means that you must be free mentally and physically to express yourself however you must. This is not possible when the mind is bogged down with an endless clutter of mediocre and rigid ways of thought.

The greatest gifts that Jeet Kune Do offers its followers is simplicity and the absolute freedom to question what is learned. Our journey is about growth and simplicity. When one is completely honest with one's self and without ego, it is easy to see that simplicity, and not complexity is the key. Taking a never-ending journey to get more from yourself at times may not feel rewarding. People mistake the path to simplicity as the easy way out. That belief could not be further from the truth. The path to simplicity requires continuous self-evaluation and when you perceive the trial by fire is complete, you’ll realize that you have only reached one of the lower summits in the journey up the mountain of self-discovery. 🤙

When we practice seeing and facing “what is” without condemning, judging, escaping and turning away, we have the opportunity to better understand ourselves and evolve. We must come to accept “what is” within our self in order to move through this life with satisfaction and peace. 🤙
