🏴‍☠️ FOURTEEN MINUTES

There was one league-wide match left in the 2026 season.

Three players were tied atop the Golden Boot race with eight goals.
Fourteen minutes remained.

Then Damon Almazan got the ball.
He danced down the left flank, skipped past his defender, and whipped a perfect ball into the path of Shady Omar. One touch. One finish.

One Golden Boot.

With his 76th-minute strike, Omar claimed his second Midwest Premier League Golden Boot.

It also continued a Steel City tradition.

For the second straight year, a Steel City player seized the Golden Boot on the final day at Slammers Stadium. Last year, Christian "Train" Baumgartner entered the finale three goals behind the league lead…then scored four in one unforgettable night to steal the crown.

Before that, Shea Bechtel captured the award in 2022.

🏴‍☠️ GOLDEN. AGAIN

The season ended with a 2-1 defeat to Sueño FC, but not before Shady Omar wrote another chapter in Steel City history.

Omar's 76th-minute opener secured his second Midwest Premier League Golden Boot. Sueño scored twice in the closing minutes to take the result, but the night belonged to Steel City's No. 19.

In just six MWPL seasons, Steel City has now produced three Golden Boot-winning campaigns. And remarkably, both of the last two were clinched on the final night at Slammers Stadium. Last year it was Christian "Train" Baumgartner's unforgettable four-goal performance. This year, it was Shady's turn.

The season may be over but stay with us. We will look back on 2026, follow our players and coaches through their college seasons and spotlight local soccer across the region.

🏴‍☠️ SEASON FINALE

Coach Dillard has named his XI one last time in 2026.

Steel City takes the field tonight at Slammers Stadium looking to build on last week's 9-1 demolition of Berber City, the biggest win in club history.

And if history is any guide, don't leave your seat. When these two sides met just two weeks ago, they combined for nine goals.

We're keeping a close eye on Shady Omar's Golden Boot chase. We'll know this afternoon exactly how many he needs, but it's well within striking distance.

Slammers has seen this movie before. A year ago, Christian "Train" Baumgartner entered the season finale trailing by three goals, then ripped home four in one unforgettable night to steal the Golden Boot. Why not again?

It wasn't a win, but it was a hard fought match in the Illinois State Cup Final on Saturday morning in Bensenville, IL.

Steel City NXT is the U23 squad under the Steel City umbrella. The cup remains out of reach, but you can be sure they'll come back next year more determined than ever!

🏴‍☠️ NOT THIS TIME

For 107 years, no Joliet-based club has lifted an Illinois State Cup.

That remains true tonight.

It continues to be almost a statistical anomaly that Illinois' third-largest city, a city larger than the biggest city in ten U.S. states…a soccer city, continues its drought.

A tight first half preceded a Jaslo goal and Steel City equalizer. Czarni found the winner eight minutes from time.

This was Steel City’s third trip to the U23 Illinois State Cup Final. Once again, one match short.

But one result doesn't define the Steel City project, now in its sixth year.

Every season, more Southland players are proving that playing at a high level no longer requires an hour's drive north. Routinely, Steel City now goes toe-to-toe with clubs that have existed for decades.

The gap has narrowed.
