We are all happy about the recent rains. Some of us are also happy about the recent mud… 🫣

Jonathan and Dos had a great show at middleburghorsetrials this weekend. If you look at the results, it may not look like that was the case. They finished in the middle of the pack, as they have done so many times before. We have been working on fixing bad habits (from both rider and horse), and I have asked both to work very differently than what they are used to. The pair dropped two rails in show jumping. That has literally never happened before in their partnership. In fact, they went about three years without ever dropping a rail. However, this round, Dos did not rush any fences but maintained a good rhythm throughout. Jonathan did not hold his Dos’ face over the jumps, and I saw the absolute best canter I have ever seen from Dos. However, Dos has relied on the bad habits of Jonathan to lean on to maintain his bad habits. Fixing bad habits is hard, and sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. Thanks to jjhorowitz1 for having a super attitude throughout the whole show and believing in the big picture. Onto the next one!

We are so grateful to have great resources around us like to hone our skills. We had a great jump day today! Both Salty and Dos are feeling ready for a big month ahead.

SOLD:
Suspiros, perfect ammy/junior horse.
2017 16.2+h OTTB gelding
Well traveled
Easy to handle
Lovely consistent gaits
Cy has been in the program for over three years and has been ridden by both my junior son (now 12) and ammy husband while continuing his education with me. His most valuable trait is he absorbs mistakes. He has a steady way of going, and absolutely takes a joke. He tries very hard for his rider and is an all around “good boy.”
Cy is comfortable in the arena and confident out outside. Can ride out along or with a trout, lead or follow. He is the same horse at home and away.
Tons of pics and videos. Waterford, Va

I think Dos heard I was at an Arabian Breed Show all weekend and is offended I didn’t take him. What an instigator! He, and the rest of the boys, will probably appreciate getting back into work after a week off.

How’s that for judges remarks?! 72.6% in Training 2. Six (out of six) blues and counting. What a lovely horse I have here as a partner.

… And just like that, I’m a hunter again. 😂 On a whim, Cheryl Estancona entered Dejah in an Open Hunter class an hour before it started. Sure, why not? It was the same judge that Loved Dejah in both her classes yesterday (she won both). Dejah was just about foot perfect, and I dug deep from my distant past, and think I did a pretty good job looking the part as well… aside from the white breeches 🤷‍♀️. Another blue to add to the pile.

Dejah’s very first class at her first breed show (and my first in two decades) was a huge success. Not only did we leave with the blue, but the judge was Very complementary of both Dejah and how she was presented. Her owner, Cheryl Estancona and I could not be more proud!

Not a bad view to start the day. 😊

Don’t get involved with horses if you aren’t willing to get your heart broken.
We lost Tuli last night to an extremely sudden and aggressive small intestine colic. She had a lovely day yesterday, including the day on pasture, some pampering before getting confo shots (the first two picture is from yesterday), a nice ride, and even a peaceful dinner. By 8:30 she was down. Acting quickly, I got the vet out immediately, and soon after I took her into to hospital.
To say I am devastated is an understatement. Tuli was, on all accounts, a true “red mare.” She was guarded, had extremely strong opinions about many things, and she was always ready, willing and able to express those opinions very clearly. But also like a true red mare, she was the most kind and loving horse I have ever been around once you cracked through those walls.
When I was in the process of starting her- which was both incredibly easy because she simply didn’t care about anything, and incredibly difficult because she was going to be damned if she was going to have someone else tell her what to do- I remember talking with Kim about the process, and her response was “What’s it like riding yourself?” I nearly died laughing… but she wasn’t wrong.
She was Chase’s favorite horse. Yes, even with Cy here. She taught Chase how much you gain by learning to trust and build a proper relationship through respect and understanding. Chase would regularly go down to the barn at night just to give her “butt scritches.”
Tuli was the boldest and most trusting horse that I have ever sat on. And her talent… my God, was she phenomenally gifted. She had all the ingredients to be at the highest levels of the sport. She is, and maybe always will be the one I trust the most, and my favorite to ride, out on an xc course.
Tuli was only six, and what we were able to accomplish by that young age is amazing. I will forever dream about what could have been…
Go hug your horses.
