I’m so sorry that folks get intimidated by photos and videos of people doing “perfect yoga poses”, and think that has anything to do with what yoga really even is.
So many times I hear people saying yoga isn’t for them, because yoga folks can’t stop posting fancy headstands and balancing poses, without context, and saying “you should join us”.
There was a meme that went around a bit recently, of a teacher doing an elaborate balancing pose, with her saying folks could join her in the pose if they wanted. And then the video flashed to a cat, puddling on the floor and rolling to their back.
HILARIOUS!
And some of my students sent it to me, which made my day!
To me, to our group, the yoga lies in having the comfort and the confidence to say “absolutely not” or “absolutely not, today”. And to know you won’t be shamed, or asked to just “push through the discomfort”, or be told you’re not trying hard enough.
Folks, life is hard enough. We don’t need to show up for self-care and be told it has to be harder than the capacity we have for that moment. Puddle on the damn floor. Tell me absolutely not. Listen to your body.
You’ve shown up for yourself, and this is your practice. Listening to yourself, deciding what feels best, choosing kindness for you, and communicating your needs are ALL important parts of yoga.
On Monday, we went to First Chapter Bookstore and held a restorative (super restful and supported) yoga class while we read our favorite books. Yes, any book at all. I brought my Shadow Work journal and worked on that. Folks bring all sorts of stuff to read, and nobody peeks over your shoulder. We just rest, together.
One of our students told me this was parallel play, and I LOVED this. It is!
Knowing we have that level of comfort with each other, to rest next to one another and read together, it’s everything. It’s so special. And it’s yoga.
There’s no entry level knowledge needed, no code for how to act. We just rest together, in a few different poses. Or not. It’s your practice.
Yoga to me in this class was also having the time to really take in how awesome it is, to see our family resting-really taking time to nurture themselves. That gratitude of getting to witness that is so emotional. Such a gift.
Yoga is also getting settled into comfort, using the blankets and the props because they feel loving and supportive. Yoga is noticing your neighbor needing them too, and grabbing an extra set while you’re up getting your own.
Yoga is gently reaching your hand out to your side so the shop cats can stroll by and nuzzle you while you read.
Yoga is hearing the halfway mark of a pose, and letting yourself really melt into your shape. And your shape never, ever has to look like your neighbor’s shape. It’s always a valid shape.
So much of yoga is about feeling: Feeling comfort, feeling love and grace for yourself, finding your own boundaries, deciding you want to get kitty nuzzles (or not)…so many little decisions that all start with showing up. But it’s hard to share photos of these things.
So instead, I share class photos and write about them.
I was so happy to get to really notice our class on Monday. With restorative (and yin), slower-paced classes, there’s extra moments where I have the luxury of really looking around. It’s not a time of judgement, ever. It’s really a time of extreme gratitude, for me.
So grateful to get the chance to take our students in and see how cool it is to witness self-care.
Loving these photos from Candice, and our first Chapter team. Thank you to everyone for showing up for yourselves, and parallel playing, together. 💜
Up next is a class honoring one of my very favorite bands, and their 10 year anniversary. Join us for a donation-based Sleep Token-themed, gentle yoga class, this coming Sunday at 2pm, in Marietta, OH.

The next day, we’re bringing our practice to the chairs! I looove chair yoga, and look forward to this class every first Monday at Artsbridge (in Parkersburg, WV).
