Forwardness and speed are not the same thing.

Forwardness is about a horse’s attitude, willingness, and balance—not how fast it moves. A forward horse is attentive, engaged, and willing to move with purpose. It uses its entire body efficiently, generating power from the hindquarters and maintaining a consistent, balanced gait.

Speed, on the other hand, is simply how quickly a horse moves. A fast horse may be rushing, tense, or unbalanced, losing consistency as it shifts between a trot, stepping pace, and pace.

A horse can be slow and still be forward. It can also be fast without being balanced or truly forward.

What matters is developing a horse that moves with willingness, balance, and purpose. True forwardness isn’t about going faster; it’s about moving with intention, using the body correctly, and maintaining a consistent gait at whatever speed the horse is asked to travel.

5 Things As a Horse Trainer I Will NOT Apologize For.

1. Putting the horse first.
Your goals, your timeline, and your ribbons will never be more important than the horse standing in front of me.

2. Telling you what you need to hear, not necessarily what you want to hear.
You pay me for my knowledge, experience, and professional opinion. Sometimes that means having uncomfortable conversations.

3. Expecting accountability.
Progress requires effort outside of your weekly lesson. You cannot expect extraordinary results from ordinary commitment.

4. Protecting my time.
My time, just like yours, has value. Boundaries, schedules, and policies aren’t personal. They’re part of running a professional business.

5. Refusing to rush the process.
Good horses aren’t made overnight. Neither are good riders. There are no shortcuts around patience, consistency, correct training, and putting in the work.
